What are the advantages of a good case vs no side cover?

My system is as follows: P4 3.0 (Prescott), 1 MB, 9700 Pro, 2 HD. Presently, I use a no name case without a side cover. At idle, my CPU temp is 45 C and my motherboard temp is 38 C.

What would be the advantages of using a good case such as an ANTEC 3000B vs my actual setup?

Right now you have "0" control over your cooling. It's mostly just by convection.

A good case, in addition to the points made by suszterpatt, will allow you to set up a proper intake and exhaust airflow over your components.

Side panels are somewhat useful in the sense that they direct the airflow. without it, the air is free to just move out through the open side without going over the componants.

You also don't have to worry about things like, say, a sharp point sticking into your CPU fan and snapping off three blades...

I bought a 3000B after I broke my Panaflo. I'm quite pleased with it.

I recently put the side cover back on after having it off for a while. I was surprised to see my CPU and HDD temps drop +/- 5 C across the board.

Don't forget about the kitty kat or gerbels. With the side on they'll be less likely to meet an untimely end!!:Q
