Advantages, best cpu architecture out at the moment.

Disadvantages, the intel range are priced dirt cheap at the moment, worth considering.

Silly question, what do you do, what's the budget, such a vauge question cannot get any useful information other than "go away and google it".

Budget is around $200 - $250 for both motherboard and cpu.

Any suggestions.

I'd prefer both Intel and AMD suggetstions.

Thanks

What do you do with it? If it's gaming then a single core CPU wins easily, if it's media encoding then a dual core Pentium might edge it out. For other applications it varies.

Are you going to overclock?

Just normal regular use. Nothing special.
I may try to overclock. Not sure yet.

I've just been looking for some options of what to buy.

Okay, you can get an 805 Dual core for around $130 at the moment from newegg. Or you can get a 3200 or Opteron 144 for $150-$170.

If you're doing SMP aware applications then the dual core is a decent competitor, if not then i wouldn't touch it with a bargepole. Both options overclock well, but the 805 seems to need an expensive motherboard to do so, while the opteron can be OC'd to hell and back on a $90 motherboard.

I'd go AMD, but that's because the application that needs the most horsepower of all those i use is gaming, where SMP is rather scarce.
