A swap file is a section of your hard disk drive that is used for temporary storage of frequently requested data.

The less a swap file is used, the faster the system will run. If you find that your PC is accessing the swap file a lot (ie a lot of background hard drive activity) then it might be adviseable to get some additional memory.
