I'm currently an undergrad at the University of Washington majoring in Interdesciplinary Visual Arts, and I'm graduating either in March or June. I would love to transfer to a different university (not an art-only college) to pursue my master's degree and possible major in design/architecture and minor in music composition. what are some universities with a good art program? I know my current school has a pretty good program, but I really don't like the Seattle weather... it drives me crazy.

if anyone has any suggestions that would be great

thanks

i better have a pretty incredible portfolio to get into that school... sure as hell my GPA won't get me in

yeah i did actually, and a couple of my professors got their masters there.

i'm just trying to gather lots of suggestion/information and apply to many schools so that I can have many to choose from. 🙂

Good art programs, good design programs, and good architecture programs are three totally different questions. I happen to have experience with all three.

You're going to have to be more specific. Choosing a design or architecture school has more to do with finding one that fits your interests and goals than a ranking of overall quality. Additionally, there are many schools with a singular standout program in a design school that is overall pretty weak.

Generally, for art & design:

RISD
rice
parsons
pratt
cranbrook
usc
harvard
penn
Princeton
columbia
Cincinnati
SAIC

Another vote for The College of Design, Art, & Architecture (DAA) at the University of Cincinnati.

Decent campus too, very easy to get around.

Plus, where else could you stop by The Acropolis for a 3-way on your way home from the Olive Bar ? 😀

(Now called "DAAP", the P is for "Planning")

Except the DAAP program is starting to get a bad rep as many people in Cincy are starting to consider then pompous, arrogant, and self-righteous and it's losing jobs for them. I've heard at least two big name firms in Cincy that put DAAP applications at the bottom of the pile because they seem to think they are worth 50-60K out of college (Which is absurd in Cincy).

Lesser-known colleges in the area are starting to crank out students of a similar caliber and DAAP is far from stepping up their game. Don't get me wrong, though, the quality of their work is superb. Definitely a great option if you don't want to go to school in Chicago or New York (the two Eastern cities most reputed for their art & design schools), but I'm just not convinced that DAAP has their focus in students making careers out of their education more than making art out of their education. Gotta decide where the priority lies.

PS: Skyline FTW, Goldstar is teh sux.

art institute (everywhere)
cleveland institute of art
parsons (@ the new school)
pratt institute
rhode island school of design
savannah art college of design

i was talking fine arts... sculpture especially

thanks though!

oh and does anybody know of any state universities or private universities with a good art department? (not an art school please...)

Here are the schools I applied to:

RISD
MICA
Pratt
SVA
SAIC
Cooper Union

Sorry those are all exclusively art schools, except maybe Cooper which also has engineering but no one is getting into Cooper. Some of the liberal arts universities with decent art programs include:

Carnegie Mellon
NYU
Yale
Columbia
Alfred
RIT
UWash
UCLA
BU

...among others. According to USNews, the top three fine arts graduate programs of 2008 are RISD, SAIC, then Yale, in that order. Last year was RISD, MICA, SAIC.

Just some general information.

What about that one in the back of magazines? Just draw that little turtle and your in!

Have you ever wanted to draw? Do you like to doodle? Take our take-home art test by drawing a pirate or a turtle and send it in and we'll evaluate it and turn you into a real live artist!"

It's for a correspondence art school based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, originally founded in 1914 as the "Federal School", and changes its name at some point to "Art Instruction Schools." As such it did indeed garner a number of noteworthy artists as alumni, mostly, apparently, at the very start of their art careers, as the only option available to them, or a stepping stone into more serious study.

The school has an artist in each state who travels about teaching students for that area. Or at least meeting them and then teaching by correspondence. You do it in your spare time and get professional level skills, they say. Also could be somewhat of a scam.

ever heard of rhode island school of design?

Claire Cleary: Actually Todd is an amazing painter. He's going to the Rhode Island School of Design.
John Beckwith: Wow, that's awesome Todd. Well done! RIS-D!
Todd Cleary: Yeah, Dad - Dad always thought I would be a political liability...
[getting angry]
Todd Cleary: in case he ever ran for President.
Secretary Cleary: Now, now Todd. Truth be told, polling shows that most Americans would ultimately empathize with our situation.
Todd Cleary: [sharply, raising his voice] What IS our situation, Dad?
Grandma Mary Cleary: You're a homo.

Where's the SVA love? *is a student there*

Went there for precollege. It was a pretty cool place...great area, nice facilities. Unfortunately I got into RISD so I was almost obligated to come here instead...I really liked SVA though.
