Just curious what you all think, we discussed this for about 2 hours in my Ethics course today...

What are some Universal Values that everyone around the world share?

Do Universal Values even exist...?

it should be universally accepted that Ethics is a more interesting class than anthropolgy, which I just got out of, and it sucked.

You're going to spend the rest of the semester talking about whether or not there even are absolute values, but one that seem to be universal at the current time:

Eating people is wrong.

I've wondered that very same question... I'd have to assume that atoms are universal, but then that's an assumption of a being with very limited cognitive abilities...

'cause it's only right for someone just learning about values :)
brush up on some kant. moral relativism is easily disproven, we may disagree on the small stuff but everyone agrees that there are certain values that must be held true to maintain a functional society, at very least.

Thats exactally what weve been discussing about in class.... I agree that there are certain things that are essential to societies, but our point was that there is always an exception. This then brought us into a debate on the definition of 'universal' and we came out with the understanding that it means 'unequivocally everyone'. In which case, i dont see any universal values that everyone holds true....

so barbecuing a baby alive and eating it is ok, sometimes?

i am thinking there is no human society where it is ok to cook a human baby alive and eat it

even in tribal societies that practiced cannibalism, there were rules about who got eaten and under what circumstances

Then I would most definitely have to go with "no." You're assuming that other sentient beings would operate similar to us, which is a rather bold assumption...

But your speaking about within a set of rules, we were trying to step out of society and look at the picture from a whole...

:-/... are you asking if there are any universal values that permeate all life, regardless of society?

Whoa, wait a minute. When you're referring to "universal" values, are you talking about values that exist within the entire universe, or values that exist among humans?

as far as this conversation is concerned, is there really a difference? we could be the only ones in the universe, we don't have any evidence to the contrary (besides statistics ;)), so it's safe to assume that universe means just humans, since it's kinda one and the same.
