What are some traits that you are looking for in a mate?

I have been thinking about it and I decided it would be enlightening to attempt to enumerate the characteristics my current ideal mate would have. It is a difficult list and I am hoping to get inspiration from other people's suggestions.

I am sure it is a pretty futile exercise because I'll probably be blown away by someone that doesn't meet half the list but I think it is helping me learn a lot about myself.

A person who can tolerate you and likewise you can tolerate their faults, flaws and insecurities....for starters.

Someone who is beautiful and takes care of themselves (ie working out, do the typical hair/make-up routine, etc) because they want to look beautiful and not necessarily because they want to impress you.

I'm looking for someone who can share my interests, and activities in life, and make me smile. Of course when my wife finds out i'll be dead. :p

One who is always in a good mood. I'm actually really emotionless so a girl who complements me (and makes up for my grumpiness) would be good.

Speaking from the formerly-single me in the past:

1) Financial maturity-by this I mean that the person has common sense where money is concerned and doesn't blow it on stupid, expensive, frivolous crap like expensive cars and clothes and meals

2) At least a few interests in common with me

3) Similar views on religious and political issues

4) Interested in living in the country and being self-sufficient, and raising kids in the country

5) Interested in having a family eventually

6) Is crazy about me

7) Isn't bat-sh!t crazy, lazy, selfish, a smoker, a drug user, an alcoholic, or extremely obese (looks really don't matter much to me since you always think the person you love is perfect, but someone who is extremely overweight probably has problems that I don't want to deal with as well as serious health issues that would interfere with a long, healthy marriage)

8) Educated or in the process of getting an education

honest, doesn't mind saying 'no', athletic (not a requirement, but a plus), intelligent, caring... the list goes on

Intelligent, kind, smiles a lot, values education & common sence, values physical fitness, likes to travel, wants to go skydiving, smart with money...to name a few.

Oh and yes, Huge....tracts of land! :D

I have no preconceptions going into any relationship, ever.
Having set standards makes you a very inflexable person. Inflexablility is the first deep step to disaster.

Having no understanding of what you need from a partner is the first deep step to divorce. Setting no standards whatsoever sets you up for a series of failed relationships. Why start a relationship with somebody that is doomed from day one due to a serious difference in lifestyle and goals? Like, for instance, why date someone who wants ten kids when you want none? Why date someone who blows every dime they make on lottery tickets and designer purses when you spend wisely and save for the future? Why date someone whose religious views are so radically different from yours that it will become a problem down the road when you are raising children together?
