I used to chat one one one with many people via ICQ, AOL, and other 1 on 1 message platforms but not anymore.

Searching for random things on Kazaa, Winmx, Direct Connect, Bearshare etc... Not just warez but even just random videos and stuff. Heck I remember finding lot of 9/11 footage that way. Youtube did not exist back then.

I kinda miss those types of networks though, there was something kinda neat about being able to just share a whole folder on your computer with the world, and others doing the same, and finding all sorts of interesting stuff. Torrents are better for the quality as there is a bigger barrier to entry when it comes to sharing something though, but they are not decentralized like these networks were.

I always wondered what the origin was for that term...was it some specific user name that provided the most commonly-sourced virus-laden porn, music, games, etc?

and it all just became "Warez"?
I figured it was a shortening of warehouse.

Just a corruption of "softwares" isn't it?

AIM & IRC. Played a lot of Counterstrike back in the day. Chatrooms (pre-Discord) for solving problems & catching up on scene news (pre-Facebook groups). Way more ATOT than was healthy. Did website for fun & then professionally for awhile (getting back into it later this year! but on a hobby-level).

I used to spend a lot more time on the computer because I was so low-energy all the time. I previously had issues with food & undiagnosed sleep apnea, and didn't get diagnosed with ADHD until my mid-20's. Computers & the Internet were a lifesaver for me at the time, because I had no energy & garbage focus. I consider myself extremely fortunate that knowing computer stuff translates into a good job, because I was able to make the transition from a slacker into a reasonably-competent adult who could contribute to the workforce lol. My focus is still crap, but I'm able to do a lot more with my life now that I understand how to manage my physical & mental energy!
