You should definitely check out the french quarter. I bet you probably could catch a Mardi Gras Parade too. There is so many of them they start weeks before Mardi Gras.

Bourbon street, all those small reggae shops that sell drug paraphenelia, I took this boat cruise that explained about rednecks and redneck culture and it was really really good. Also some great seafood places there and I forget what some of the local foods new orleans is famous for but I had some of those too.

Cafe Du Monde, Jackson Square, and interestingly enough are some of the churces.

As someone who has been to NOLA several times throughout their life, I can't stand Bourbon Street. Definately go and see it, but mid-town and other areas are more interesting cheaper and much better food.

If you are in the quarter and want some cheap food check out Cafe Mespero (sp). It's cash only, but you can get out of there for less than 10$/person which is hard to do in that area. Another place I'd recommend is Louisa's, but I don't recall exactly where it is.

The WW2 Museum is EXCELLENT.

Some already listed..

Cafe Du Mond (Don't wear dark clothes.. haha)
Jackson Square
Lafitte's Blacksmith Bar - Great Huricanes.. go in the evening for the candle ambiance.
Wander around.. take a walking tour or 2. Lots to see and do. Lots of History.
Get a couple Hand Grenades before noon. They sell them on the streets.
Wander the streets with beer, just because you can.
Check out the Cemeteries.. we roamed around the one north of Bourbon Street.. it was quite a few blocks but very interesting.

The New Orleans Zoo is pretty sweet if you like Zoos.

I love NOLA, can't wait to go back!

You can get a peanut butter hamburger at Yo-Mama's bar and grill. I had a different burger there.. but my sister swears by the PB burger. next time I'll defiantly get one.

I second the recommendation for Pat Obriens dueling piano bar. Great hurricanes- as I remember them they were a good 24oz.

People vomiting in the French Quarter. People vomiting on Bourbon Street. People vomiting off the main strip. And at the end of Bourbon street, do not venture into the "red light district", unless you're into that sort of things.

Oh, and tits.

The Superdome and Saints Hall of Fame

Actually got to catch a game last time I was out there.. Saw them play the Rams + tailgated for a bit.. Got to try some Alligator Gumbo.. It was... interesting.

Have to give Saints fans props though, they were out in force, flags all over town etc and they suuuuucked back then. Cool people too, nice contrast from the wanna-be thugsters at the Oak/SF games out here.
