Cafe Du Monde, Jackson Square, and interestingly enough are some of the churces.
As someone who has been to NOLA several times throughout their life, I can't stand Bourbon Street. Definately go and see it, but mid-town and other areas are more interesting cheaper and much better food.
If you are in the quarter and want some cheap food check out Cafe Mespero (sp). It's cash only, but you can get out of there for less than 10$/person which is hard to do in that area. Another place I'd recommend is Louisa's, but I don't recall exactly where it is.
