What are some precautions to take for your house so that it doesn't burn down?

I stay at my dads house during the morning, from 9-1pm, then again from 5pm-930pm.

This house is kinda old, and my dad just told me about a story about a house burning down some where in the country.

He said that a girl who lived there had a dream about it a year ago from the day.

Anyways, that freaked me out. I don't wanna be in here and then the house goes up in smoke, and I have my kid with me. You know what I mean?

What are some good precautions to take with electrical things.

This house is pretty old. Let me know, thanks!

You could relocate your house to CA, there will be so many blackouts this summer, your chances of an electrical fire would be nil 🙂

Consider calling an electrician in and having him give the wiring a once over, might spot some potential problems, and maybe you could sleep a little better.

First, you hide all the books so that the firemen don't come around and burn your house down when they find them...

Don't leave lights on in closets. Electrical code now prohibits lights in closets under a certain size.

This isn't an issue this time of year (or in Hawaii), but make sure the furnace is in good shape. It needs a once over every year if it's fairly old.

Don't ever burn candles, especially if you have pets or children. If you can't live without candles, don't fall asleep with them burning. My landlord has banned candles in all 11 of his buildings because of three fires in the last two years. He will now evict anyone he sees burning a candle. I live in a 30 unit building, and I'm all for it. I don't need someone else burning down my home by being careless.

Being careful is always good, but you sound somewhat paranoid. Living in fear sucks the love out of life.

well, get rid of everything flammable, coat your entire house in fire retardant gel, and never smoke.

Seriously, you cant stop a fire from happening, there are too many ways it could happen.

Absolutely no camp fires in the living room. 😀

Seriously, make sure there are smoke detectors installed and working properly...

How about the basic stuff like fire extinguishers and smoke detectors?

... and puhleeeze! get rid of those polyester leisure suits! [j/k]

If you want to live longer I would recommend being more aware while driving. I think you're more likely to meet your end there than in any fire.

Smoke detectors with fresh batteries on every floor. At least 2 fire extinguishers. These are two things EVERY house needs. The next best thing is to make sure your wiring is modern and that there are no mice in your walls chewing on old cloth wrapped wires. And don't have too many appliances plugged into the same outlet.

Smoke detectors are the real biggie.

Have the wiring checked.

Also, remove all accumulated clutter, especially piles of paper. That stuff can ignite in a flash.

Another vote for getting the wiring checked!!!

Having a few extinguishers around the house would not hurt either, like in each bedroom and in the living room and the kitchen.

Just use common sense. Make sure the wiring is up to code and that you're not overloading anything. Don't leave papers near outlets and turn off stuff when you're not using it. If you smoke, be sure to completely put out the cigarette in the ashtray. Be careful with candles, etc. Install smoke detectors, upstairs, downstairs, and in the stairwell. Don't leave a high watt lightbulb burning in a lamp. Turn it off when you're done. Don't leave the burners on the stove on. You may even want to keep a fire extinguisher handy. Get a fireproof safe to keep valuable papers and things in.

Old wiring is your worst enemy by far I think. Be sure to get that checked.

If it's a 2 story house have a fire escape ladder on the 2nd floor and make sure everyone knows where it is. One of those collapseable things that you hook onto a window sill and drop down to the ground so you can climb out if there's a fire blocking your exit down stairs.

Don't throw water on a grease fire in the kitchen. Make sure you turn off the oven when you go to sleep. Don't overload any outlets. Common sense is your best defense.
