Sublime - Scarlet Begonias (Grateful Dead)
No cover can top the Dead's Scarlet Begonias.
You and I both know most of these covers suck pretty hard, but I think I'll just be glad they're listening to something other than cRap. Maybe there's hope for the future after all...

Somebody mentioned 'Sweet Things' by Manson? I hope to hell it isn't a cover of this fabulous Bowie tune from Diamond Dogs:
  • Sweet Thing

It's safe in the city, to love in a doorway
To wrangle some screams from the dawn
And isn't it me, putting pain in a stranger?
Like a portrait in flesh, who trails on a leash
Will you see that I'm scared and I'm lonely?
So I'll break up my room, and yawn and I
Run to the centre of things
    Where the knowing one says

    CHORUS

Boys, boys, its a sweet thing
Boys, boys, its a sweet thing, sweet thing
If you want it, boys, get it here, thing
'Cause hope, boys, is a cheap thing, cheap thing

I'm glad that you're older than me
Makes me feel important and free
Does that make you smile, isn't that me?
I'm in your way, and I'll steal every moment
If this trade is a curse, then I'll bless you
And turn to the crossroads of Hamburg, as in

    CHORUS

What exactly is better about it? Guitar isn't as good, voice isn't as good, no background vocals...

Guitar I'll give you. Voice I wont. Background vocals do not always make or break a track.

Regardless of all that, music is subjective, and a version which might be better to you might not be to me. Certain intangibles, playing styles, singing styles, voice inflection, etc. might resonate stronger with me than they would with your and vice a versa. That's been known to happen from time to time with music...

"Guitar I'll give you. Voice I wont. Background vocals do not always make or break a track."

That certainly isn't as good as the original, and didn't add anything. Bowie's voice is... quality! I don't see the point of doing a cover of a song that's already a big hit, or done very well by the original artist. You can't lose doing a cover of Dylan's tunes. He can't sing for sh|t, but writes awesome stuff.

off topic, but i've recently noticed that almost all new hip-hop music uses samples from older music. all of kayne west's songs are sampled from older songs. it brings into perspective when people say that most of today's songs are remakes :)

*sigh* I guess you missed my whole point about music being subjective. That's alright though. Your opinion is just that, you're opinion. Maybe it's just a generation gap thing.

Btw, why do you fear the quote button?

Gypsy Kings - Hotel California

Metallica's cover of the Cult's "Astronomy" is splended as well, even though I don't much care for Metallica.

Coil - Tainted Love (Cover of Soft Cell)

Die Krupps - One (Cover of Metallica) <actually the entire Die Krupps Tribute To Metallica is pretty good, but track 9, which is a Dave Ogilvie remix of the Die Krupps cover is great>

Leæther Strip - Lullaby (Cover of the Cure)

Razed In Black - SiN (Cover of NiN)

Coal Chamber - The Roof Is On Fire (Cover of ??? Grandmaster Flash?) <found it - Rockmaster Scott>

it's probably their best song too =D

Nah...they did a remake of the karate kid song that was originally by Chicago. That song kicked ass!

Other good remakes:

Stars on 54: If you could read my mind, originally by Gordon Lightfoot
Pearl Jam: Last Kiss, originally by J. Frank Wilson
Fugess: Killing me softly, originally by Roberta Flack

There's a handful of good remakes.
