Sarasota, FL is year-round home to many celebrities and surprisingly you see many of them quite regularly.

Jerry Springer
Brian Johnson (AC/DC)
Dick Vitale
Martina Navratilova
Steven King
Maria Sharapova
Jennifer Capriati
Dick Smothers

and some others that I can't remember

In Michigan, folks say up north, referring to the northern part of the state and the UP.

Up north is the upper part of the lower peninsula. The UP is just the UP.

When our family visits we ask them if the want to head up to "The City" for the day, always the same confused look... What city? SF of course.

I guess "The Bay/Bay Area" is kinda common.

There is only one "The City" and SF is not it.

What he said.

Contrary to popular belief, I've never heard anyone from New Jersey call it "Joisey"

Yup and we don't make jokes about what exit we live off. Dirty Jerz is acceptable though. Also, it's the shore not the beach. If you say you are going to the beach you are not going to the ocean in Jersey.

NYC metro is known as the tri-state area for the bordering states of NY, NJ and CT.

Everyone knows this.

Philly, South Jersey and northern DE is also referred to as the tri-state area. Not saying it's THE tri-state area but it's a common term. This is gonna blow minds but I be there's a quad-state area somewhere. ;)

i HIGHLY doubt this.

How long have you been on the planet?

that's irrelevant. i've had people not from the area ask me this, so that debunks your statement that "everyone" knows this.
and yes, they are from the US.

I think Tennessee might work for something like that. TN has four large metro areas each which border another state which also have a very close large metro area.

No idea... I think everyone could guess what city "Philly" or "The City of Brotherly Love" or as some people put it, "That Shithole" is.

The coastal bend, referring to the Texas gulf coast.

It's all over the place down here. Lot's of businesses use it in their names. Not sure if many people not from the region would know what it means.

When I lived in Milwaukee, I knew many people who called it "Brewtown".

Here's what wiki says about Denver: The Mile-High City, Queen City of the Plains, The 303, D-Town

My take:
The Mile-High City: The problem is people assume you're talking about the football stadium (which was renamed to Invesco anyway)
Queen City of the Plains, The 303: Never heard anyone say either of these. Especially since there are just as many people with the 720 area code
D-Town: I've heard this once. Afterwards everyone regarded that person as a douchebag.

Aurora, CO is sometimes called Saudi Aurora because it's a shithole.

how many other regions really call themselves that?
sounds like time for another thread.

Yeah...I remember the news using the term for the Michigan/Ohio/Indiana area when I was a kid.
