EDIT: As to other "must have" Linux-apps.... That depends from user to user. For me, must have software includes Konqueror, Kmail, Xfree, KDE, Qtella....

I perssoanlly think ya would definatelly want to consider the gimp, and/or image magic. Of course for office apps you will probally want to have star office...

I would suggest going into the mandrake club and loking over the business cases. There are some interesting things you can gleam from them, esp in the area of what both businesses and indivuals deem as the necessary programs.

What about for playing mp3's? I can't remember, is it XMMS? Is that the name of the Winamp looking app that I see in desktop shots?

Every linux distro comes with all the must have utilities already. Most come with the thnigs that you find nice to have under windows too. Mandrake comes with XMMS (Winamp clone) already installed. All thestandards like tar, grep, find, all come with every distro. the Gimp should be onm the mandrake CD.

They all come with it already.

ls, cd, mkdir, rmdir, cp, mv, ...

mozilla, x, eterm, openoffice, gimp, gentoo, xmms, mplayer, povray, blender, quake3, ...

Things I have found usefull / Fun / necessary

Oidentd (I use it as my router, nice to have ident for connecting to IRC and such
Samba (Share files with windoze)
Snort (Packet sniffing, cool toy)
BitchX (Best IRC client)
VNC (in case you want to use X but you do not have a monitor on your linux box(es)
nmap (good port scanner)
ipmasqadm (depending on Kernal version)

for good utilities you need finger and grep but if you want to play cool game you have to get traceroute its a must.

irssi for cli irc, xchat for X irc. I use toc (or something like that) for aim, its a console app though. There is GAIM, but I dont know what will do MSN or Yahoo! or anything. nmap is the BEST portscanner out there.

a kernel?!! really???!! gee wow..

there is an app called ccmsn that is the equivilent of msn messenger.. hehe, kinda hard to tell with that kind of name.. 😛

X
aterm - does transparency, although i dont use that anymore. basically its a very customizeable terminal, and it's half the size of xterm. (doesnt matter much, but hey it never hurts to save memory 😛)
gimp
gaim - does aim, and i think yahoo and msn too, not sure.
galeon - browser that uses gecko, mozilla's rendering engine. fairly fast but still fairly slow too, probably because of gecko.
bbrun - simple gtk run dialog box
bbkeys - key bindings in X/blackbox
wmcpuload - cpu monitor that fits in bb slit
wmnd - net monitor that fits in bb slit
playmp3list - cli mp3 player, frontend to mpg123, extremely simple and gets the job done nicely.
bluefish - html editor with syntax highlighting

for spreadsheets, gnumeric is very nice, although i dont use it much because i dont need to make spreadsheets very often 😛

edit: oh yeah, AUDIOGALAXY!!!!!! 😀

abiword - lightweight word processor, very good
xine - mpg, avi, dvd player
gaim - aim, yahoo, napster, msn, icq, irc chat program
gimp - very good image editor
custom built kernel (as opposed to kernel 😉) - just plain better
