What are some hot ass games out right now?

StageLeft

No Lifer
Besides HL2. I've done that and farcry. Doom3 is crap.

So, what remains? I cannot play games that are only online, and I cannot play MMORPGs ever again in my life no matter what. So, I'm left with RTS's, role playing games, 1st and 3rd person shooters, etc. Also, I don't care for sports or things like the SIMS.

Thanks!

Chronicles of Riddick is pretty good, the reviews are very positive. I've only played a little bit, but I am impressed so far.

Battle for Middle Earth is a great RTS! Check it out! If you loved the LOTR movies, you will love this game.

Sid Meier's Pirates!.... it's a.. um.. pirate sim?

For good RTS's, try Relic's Dawn of War or the new Lord of the Rings RTS.

FPS: Try out Tribes 3

If you are into Grand Strategy, well I can't wait to get my hands on Hearts of Iron 2 - the first was incredible.

3rd person - Try the new Prince of Persia game.

Rome: Total War

And CGW gave Pirates 4.5 stars, even though you have to make your pirate dance to woo women. 😕

Vampire:Bloodlines is a good RPG even with the buggies.

I was able to finish it without a major issues before the patch.
After the patch, one of the main quests was loopy for me and I won't bother to replay the game again.

I'm only going by the demo, but I didn't care for Rome: Total War and I normally love that genre. It was too hard to see the actual fights going on close up and still keep on eye on the entire battle. The game "Pirates" is that one that was out like 8 years ago? And although I would never admit it in Off Topic, I actually liked that game Pirates.

I liked Call of Duty alot (just got the expansion pack for Christmas) and the new Medal of Honor demo seemed ok, very hectic and hard to see what's happening though.

I tried Rome and found it really boring. For some reason I just was not attached to it. I detest pure combat games (like myth). I need at least some "empire building". M&M games are good, but way too old!

It's turnbased strategy/rpg goodness 😉, it's not Might and Magic.

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher's Bay is my GotY

Excellent gfx on a par with HL2 or better (uses the advanced shaders the 6800 series can only display), very good gameplay, great story and it's a FPS done a little differently so it seems new and innovative. You get to do everything from sneak to climb into a mech suit and blast away. Voice acting is top notch - i am NOT a Vin Diesel fan but THIS game is MUCH better than the Riddick movies. Great dark humor!

HIGHLY recommended. You need a decent system to run it . . . . i'd say at least a 9800p to get most everything.

Now bargain bin . . .

Thief - Deadly Shadows is my favourite of the Thief series. . . . GREAT story (including a classic horror level) and shadows and lighting and the BEST audio in any game (i found so far) . . . PLUS you no longer have to sneak . . . . weapons are better and you get some great 'climbing gloves'.

Deus Ex: Invisible War is super cheap in Hot Deals right now (like $5 with shipping). When it first came out it simply ran like CRAP and fans of the original HATED it since it is pretty different from the original. HOWEVER, it is a GREAT game in its own right - NOT to be compared to the original (it IS different). Get the patch or it won't run . . . even so it is a resource hog.

Max Payne: The Fall of MP. Like the original but grittier and it tells way too much (the story ain't great) but the action is just like a continuation from the original . . . good gfx for mid-range systems.

SW - Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. Dated gfx although decent (Quake III engine) but SUPERB gameplay - especially the force powers and a great story to boot. I am 3/4 done with it and it is extremely addictive.

Finally if you are into RPG, KoTOR is classic SW and bargain bin and KoTOR II is out Feb 8.
edit: i think you said 'never again' . . . why not?

Of course, STALKER, FEAR, Serious Sam II & the new Tom Clancy are all due this Spring. 🙂

painkiller is also extremely good

kinda like what quake2 should have been like, back to hunting spawns of hell instead of some robots

Here's a recent related thread that may help

Here's the new release schedule copied from that thread:

Looks like after KoTOR II in Feb, there is BATTLEFIELD 2 PCHB/DOOM 3:
Resurrection of Evil Expansion Pack (i WON'T be getting this one)/Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory are due in March,
FEAR/Team Fortress 2/STALKER are due in May,
GTA-SA/Black & White 2/Ghost Recon II are due in June

and i am getting both Painkiller and FC as soon as they are bargain bin (sub$20 at retail). BTW, Chronicles of Riddick is a bit short (10-15 hours for us 'normal' gamers) but also only $29.95 msrp. 😉
