if you want some real sad songs, dive into some black/death metal, not this other mainstream band stuff :)

Opeth - Credence
Opeth - Face of Melinda
Katatonia - Scarlet Heavens
Katatonia - Quiet World
Katatonia - I Am Nothing
Katatonia - For Funerals to Come
Katatonia - Day
Katatoina - Gateways of Bereavement
Daylight Dies - Unending Waves

Jim Cuddy - Disapointment
Hootie and the Blowfish - I'm going home
Less Than Jake - Al's War
Less Than Jake - Never going back to New Jersey
Josh Joplin Group - I've Changed...

Enjoy...don't get too depressed.

Some of the Braveheart Songs are pretty sad.
Agree Fade to Black was a song that could give infinite sadness to someone, negative publicity on metallica could have diminished the greatness of the song.
Metallicas unforgiven too.

<< The Cure - The Same Deep Water as You >>

Just about anything from the Cure. I don't know how one man can stay so sad for so long and still function.

Friday I'm In Love was pretty upbeat, I can't think of anything else Robert sings that is happy.

One of my favorites:
Red Hot Chili Peppers - I Could Have Lied (BSSM album)

Woohoo! A Talk Talk fan! In my incomplete opinion, I think Spirit of Eden is the most remarkable album of the 20th century.

Red House Painters, Low, Smog - just about all their material
David Gray - Please Forgive Me, This Years Love
Beth Orton - Pass In Time

Isn't Creed's "with arms wide open" about him being excited about the news he is going to have a child?

Anyhow, my list of sad songs:

Loreena McKennitt: The Highwayman
Live: Overcome
Sarah McLachlan: When She Loved Me, & I Love you
Clannad: I Will Find You (From Last of the Mohicans)
Most of the music from Legends of the Fall
