I'm mainly into FPSs and RTS games.

Here's the games i already got:
Crysis,
Crysis Warhead(uninstalled because it crashes to desktop much, Crysis runs fine)
Call of Duty 4
IL2 1946
Orange Box
Company of Heroes
Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 and Earned in Blood
FEAR and Extraction point
Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium wars(don't have Kane's wrath yet) and the first decade

several others

Any good FPS and RTS games for the PC that i should look into this christmas? The criteria is that the game must first of all be very stable(meaning NO crashes to desktops, i don't care how fun a game is, if it crashes to the desktop, i don't want it), and it obviously must be good.

I'm already considering COD:World at War and Left 4 dead.

Thx in advance for suggestions.

Left 4 Dead is decent so far, but you're 100% stable criteria disqualifies ALL games. No game will ever be 100% stable, and that is entirely unrealistic to expect. You may as well sell your PC and buy a console if you don't want any CTDs.

ok, so i guess i'll lower the criteria. The CTDs must not happen all the time, like I've had happen with Crysis Warhead and Morrowind, and like i've heard with Fallout 3 and Oblivion.

You need starcraft, ive played it for 10 years on many different OS's and it has never ever crashed not once. Actually when it did start to crash a few years ago i had a look at my hardware, turned out my RAM was faulty... I tried other games and they also crashed for no reason. Now thats a solid game! Its fun too.

As for FPS's i recommend L4D, ive been playing the demo and it gonna rock when the full game is released its a blast. It caters to typical co-op play but you can have a lot of fun just mucking around as well, for example my team were harassing the tank (think nemesis from resident evil only angrier) so things got a little rough and we ran away, to buy us time i incapacitated the straggler teammate with a shotgun to the chest to keep the tank busy and buy the rest of us time to escape. It was so funny! You can play as an infected too, although this cant be done on the demo unless you have a dedicated server or know someone with a server and know a few console commands. Its pretty stable as well... i mean a few hours after release i had a few sound loop crashes etc but theyve patched it since then and its working fine now, only time its crashed is when someone spawned a few hundred witches in the same location, it was like a nursery only worse, all that crying  valve make pretty solid games, the source engine sometimes dosent take well to being minimized though.

So get starcraft and left 4 dead. Starcraft II is coming soon also. Also you said you dont have kanes wrath for C&C3, dont bother with it, its a waste of money. They outsourced it to apes so its got a lot of bugs and the story isnt particularly great anyways.

I already got starcraft.

Also, i don't want any games made by EA, because Crysis Warhead(which i bought yesterday) crashes to the desktop like once every 30 minutes. Regular crysis works fine, though. But thats the last time i make the mistake of buying EA games.

I can imagine all the typical rts recommended-starcraft, supreme commander, c&c's, warcraft etc.

But one of the most overlooked RTS games I've ever played is Sins of a Solar Empire. IMO Some really great gameplay thats original and innovative in terms of RTS. Be sure to check out some reviews, it really flew under the radar. Definitely check out the Civilization series too for a different Strategy flavour(aside from RTS).

As for FPS that you don't have, Counter strike is timeless(or source) for multiplayer. Though check out Bioshock if you haven't given it a go. As for modern FPS multiplayer you can't really go past COD4(which you have:p).

I'm mainly into single-player games, so i really don't care for multiplayer.

definitely look into Dawn of War/Warhammer 4000, as well as Company of Heroes.

of course all blizzard RTS's are awesome, as well as C&C3, C&C Generals, and Rise of Nations.

I know you said no EA, but since you already have SecuROM, might as well try another; Far Cry 2.

For some reason a lot of people don't like it here, but for me it is stable, looks GREAT and has great performance, and is insanely fun. check it out.

Call of Duty 1 - Best in the series
Call of Duty 2
No One Lives Forever - Just an overall good game, lighthearted dialogue and the voice acting make this extremely enjoyable.

Those crashes are related to mostly codec and driver problems on part of the user PC, not the software. I had a friend who had a corrupted AC3 codec on his PC that Fallout 3 was trying to use and would crash the game every 5 minutes when I wasn't having a single problem. At first we didn't realize that was the problem, but we sat down on Saturday trying to figure it out. Ended up finding out it was the AC3 codec, and disabled that and excluded Fallout 3 from FFDShow and BAMM!! no more crashes to the desktop for him.

The point I am trying to make is that 90% of the time, CTD's for "stable" games are the direct result of user error or a bad PC.

I like the Total War series, Rome and Medieval 2, with its RTS battles and turn based building. Empire Total War is suppose to be out in February.

I recommend Sins of a Solar Empire too, but it should be noted that the online multiplayer player counts are pretty damned low. You can play Sins in single player but the real Sins game is online multiplayer. Still, if you're patient you can find games to get into and if you come on during European and North American prime time games are available all the time.

To get a feel for what Sins online multiplayer is all about...

I played an awesome one last night, a 3v3 on Entanglement. My starting position was in between two opponents (Cyan and Indigo), who tried to sandwich me early on but I took down Indigo's mothership (an expensive capital ship), kept my own mothership alive (barely), and was able to get a teammate (Green) to hit Cyan in the back which made that Cyan retreat back to his own planets to defend himself. I had built up a nice-sized fleet of Illuminators (long range laser frigates) and when they tried to sandwich me again Green hit Cyan in the back again and I went after Indigo who only had me on his flank. Indigo had lost most of his fleet to me earlier and he had foolishly divided his fleet so that he could rape my planets of their orbiting military labs and resource mines, so I went after him and took down his home asteroid and terran planet.

The sandwich strategy should have worked against me but they made the mistake of not following through by taking my planets down. (Cyan should have ignored Green and just taken my planets as his new home.) My third teammate, Yellow, was a noob and was knocked out by the third opponent, Orange, (who actually got Returning Armada up and running at a very low level). While I was taking down Indigo (who had relocated, unbeknownst to my team, to Yellow's planets) Green took out Cyan and then I went to work on Yellow before he could get Returning Armada humming and we won the game.

Why not try online multiplayer for a greater challenge? Online multiplayer gaming is more intense because you have to face the prospect that you could actually lose (instead of just beating up on a hapless computer AI). Also, you'll get to enjoy coordinating teamwork with human opponents and chatting with them, etc.

Best FPS game... Right now I give the award to Unreal Tournament 2004. Although the original Unreal Tournament (1999) is perhaps the greatest online multiplayer FPS game of all time, I think UT 2004 would be the one to buy since you can find populated Onslaught servers and Invasion Monster Hunt RPG servers.

Unreal Tournament 3, while it has decent game play, ended up getting a heavily consolized (clunky, slow, few options) user interface and proved to be an Epic failure, having very low online player counts. (UT 2004 is still very worthwhile, though.)

Look for the Unreal Anthology which I've seen at GoGamer.com for about $10 shipped (give you the original single player campaign game Unreal, Unreal 2, Unreal Tournament (1999), and UT 2004).

After the UT games I'd consider getting Call of Duty 4 though I've never played it.
