I have a Gary Fisher, (Supercaliber) I am very happy with it's geometry and the way the frame feels.

i would have to disagree. specialized is overpriced for what you get, but thats just me.. i am going to suggest:

Trek 6700
Trek 4900(I ride a Trek, and it is an incredible bike..)
Jamis Dakota XC
Jamis Dakota AL(Jamis isnt as well known.. however, my friend's uncle is a "high-up" at Jamis, and my friend is sponsored by them, and they're bikes are HIGH-quality..)

I agree.
Jamis is a good brand. I was considering a Jamis Dakar Pro before I got my Rocky Mountain element.

My preference, though I'm sure there's better ones:

Fuji
Royce Union
Dyno

royce union? hahahahaha no.

atlantean: we've already recommended a hell of a lot of brands, how many do you need? 😉

I just want to make a well informed buy. Are there any good online retailers?

I have a sort of related question, so I will put it here.

What are the different sizes for headposts ? I have an Answer A*TAC Stem that I wanna sell, but dunno exactly what size it is. Its the part that goes into the headpost and the handlebars go into it. Its is not for the bigger headposts, but the smaller of the 2 sizes. Cannondales have the bigger pipes, and this not for that size.

Thanks

I know nothing about mountain bikes either. I bought a Raleigh m50 about 1 1/2 years ago for $329 and it works great for me.

How old is it? It's either a 1", 1 1/8" or 1 1/4" depending on it's age (older = usually smaller). Might be etched onto it somewhere or you can just measure with a set of calipers.

Thats it, I gotta measure it w/calipers, then on eBay it goes.

I'm partial to Raliegh, since I've owned one since 1995 and have only ever had to replace 2 spokes.

thats usually the wheels, not the frame (frame is basically the only part made by the "company that makes the bike". the rest is just parts bought and assembled by that company...)

Well, OK. Then Raleigh gathered a great group of parts to attach to their frame. :|

Damn. Took you long enouh to cue in here. 😉 😛

Personally, I've always liked Fuji. Canondale's are good, but expensive, and I'm not sure what's gonna happen to the now that they're closing shop. Trek, Gary Fisher (expensive), Giant (cheap) have all been good to me and my friends. I personally have a '98 Fuji SX. Great bike. Used it in XC competitions in Moab a few times, very sturdy. 22lbs. Good for large riders.

Ok I think I am gonna get a trek 6700 if I can find one in my area. That or a Haro Escape 8.2. There is also a chance that I will end up with a Specialized Rockhopper Comp. I can't really afford a good full suspension bike, so I will probably get a hardtail. Which of the selections is the best bike. Keep in mind I don't know much about Mountain Bikes.

The Trek 6700 is a really nice bike. I have a 6500 (couple of years old) as my spare / commuter bike. I still take it out on the trail sometime and it rocks.

Kona Stinky Dee Lux

Well I just bought one of these. 😀 Can't wait to try it on the shore.

Kona has some nice bikes. There'e even a dealer in your neck of the woods.

Giant is also a good value for the money.

Best bet is to check out a few stores in town. In your price range you can't go wrong with what ever you choose. Better to find a shop that you trust and that has good customer service.

I am thinking about maybe getting a used Kona Stinky... that is if I can find a good one in my area. Is that a good choice?

i own a Diamond bike topenga comp
i had a K2 zed 3.0 stolen from me

i have ridden trek, gary fisher, and cannondale

i like my diamond back much better

What do you guys think about this one?... i'm not knowledgeable about MTBs so i'm trying to get ideas from this thread... but it seems like you can't get a decent MTB under $300... 🙁

I've always been a big fan of Specialized. When I was lucky enough to work at a shop in college, all the guys rode the S-Works line (their racing line) including myself. It's top notch stuff, but looking at prices now, it's "OMG that sheez is expensive!" I will say, be it actual hype or technology, the big "S" does do a lot of R&D. The new Epic series and the BrainShok seem like good low maintenance, high durability ideas, but I would never buy a first year any "new" bike technology comes out...anybody remember the old Rock Shox Mag 21's? They'd blow a seal every week. Let them work out the kinks first before taking the plunge.

I'm looking to build up a new full suspension XC bike this year, and I'm actually leaning towards the Giant NRS series...same linkage as the Specialized FSR series, but hella cheaper.

As far as mainstream, production brands go, any of the big reputable names will work fine. Everything else is branding and differentiation of those brands. Specialized, Giant, Kona, Trek, etc, etc, etc....are all great. The only big brands I'd stay away from are GT and Schwinn since they just recently were bought by Pacific Bicycles and the consensus is that everything is still sorta up in the air as far as support from the local bike shops. Oh, and Cannondale just recently filed for bankrupcy protection, but from what I read, it isn't going to affect their day to day operations, but it is something to consider.

However, boutique brands rock....I love Independent Fabrications (IF) stuff and any of the boutique Ti frame makers also make me DROOOOLLLL! But be prepared to pay an arm and a leg.

All I can say is support your LBS. They work hard to make ends meet and it's still one of those mom and pop types of businesses where you can still develop a relationship with them and get that personalized service that you're not going to get from a souless corporation like Performance or Nashbar.

I don't seem to have an opinion on anything bicycle do I? 😱

Hit the trails and have fun! Peace!
