What are some good hiking boots / shoes?

I need some good hiking boots or shoes for <$100. I'm going to spend a month in Montana, yes, backpacking. I have some Teva's that are nice for the days when sandals will do, but what should I get for the rest of the time? Thanks!

I've had several pairs of Vasques and love them. I'd advise ponying up for the ones with the gore-tex liners since they're that much warmer and more waterproof.

I'll tip my hat to merrell. I've had a pair for about two years now that I've beat the holy hell out of. The ones with the neoprene boot in them are quite supportive, comfortable, and do an excellent job of keeping the water out.

Your best bet is to go talk to the guys at your local outdoors shop, tell them what you're up to and see what all they recommend. I'll tell you this though, if you're going to be backpacking for a month, you better go whole hog on your boots or your trip will suck. I'd skip the sandals completely unless you really like shinsplints.
