Battle Realms is good. I've played it on a 400mhz PII and it works fine if your vid card has 16mb memory or higher.

I really didn't like ta either... there was just something about it that made me never want to come back to it. Starcraft and C&C were definately the best strategy games (I still play both, but more generals now). Dark Reign was alright, but pretty limited. Red Alert is just more to add to command and conquer, and how could that be bad? Age of Empires was great too, but still not on par with starcraft or c&c.

If thats the case, buy a new machine for the sole purpose of Rise of Nations :) no seriously, its a really great game :p

Red Alert was my favorite. Red Alert 2 was good also. AOM and Generals were fun but probably wouldn't run well on that system.
