From time to time my dad considers a digital camera but never ends up buying one. Its partly because we have no complaints with our Nikon camera right now. He really likes Nikon BTW.

How do the Nikon digital cameras stack up? And what is the best digital camera at $100 increment price ranges?

As in, whats the best camera for the following prices:

$200 - $300
$300 - $400
$400 - $500
$500 - $600

I'm looking for one that is simple, as in not having to select a ton of things before taking a picture, and good image quality. What else should I be looking for other than the Megapixel rating?

I don't think we're going to buy right away, but when he does get in the mood, I want to be able to show him the best depending on what I think he'll be ready to spend on one.

Ummmm....anything canon.

<----- Self annointed canon whore.

Seriously though, you can't go wrong with an A60, A70, S40, S50, G2, G3, or any of the Elph models.

Great cameras.

The best zoom in it's class definitely.

10x optical right ?

Atleast that's what I think mine had when I had the C720 ;)

Decent size too for what it does.

Canon EOS 10D DSLR.

I never read your spending limit. The Sony DSC-717 and V1 are good options. The Canon G5 just came out too.

Would more be needed for a good digital camera? I'm not looking for anything very high end but I don't think it should be too expensive either...

DSC-F717 as far as 5 megapixel

G5 is over priced, and EOS is pretty damn expensive.

I have a canon s200 ;)

$200 ATHD

My older Olympus C-3040 took amazing pics, but being able to carry around my S400 all the time means I'm taking pics more often. Love it. Aren't small digicams sweet? :)

If you want the best of the best, seriously consider the Canon EOS 10D DSLR. Even if you're a beginner it's fairly easy to get used to. It does have automatic settings as well that produce astonishing pictures.
