what are some good benchmark programs to compare cpus by myself instead of use anandtech?

for gpu I use afterburner and just take screenshots. not so reliable though.

Well, for starters, you could use some of the same benchmarks that AT uses that you have access to.

Handbrake is a free and very good multi-threaded video encoder. It's what I would use to test encoding performance.

Gaming performance, I like to actually play the game with FRAPS running in the background in benchmark mode. That will record min/avg/max fps.
