What are some cool things to play with on linux? I installed mandrake and wanted to play around with it..

ack! First time configuring the kernal is not fun more like a nitemare going through thousands of options :Q (if you use a graphical utility for the kernal... you are cheating)

You installed software without a plan any more clear than "to play around with it"? I say uninstall it for now and come back when you have a plan of action.

For cd burning there's a command line too called cdrecord. If you need a gui app there's xcdroast that is pretty easy to deal with.

For the binary news reader there are several, and I can't remember any of their names right now .

What other applications would you need to use?

I really had no intention of installing mandrake, but i needed to get grub running for
