- LockOn: Modern Air Combat (has flyable A-10)
- Falcon 4 (with various add-ons)

I'm not such a big fan of the scripted flgiht mechanics of Lock On but it's as close as it get's right now. I enjoy IL2 much more, even to this day 3 years after it's release, but it's not modern.

LOMAC.

but busting german armor in a soviet IL-2 is much more fun.

Il-2:FB is the better game, but LOMAC has lots of cool things going for it (more jet engines).

Is LOMAC playable yet? I heard that it was riddled with bugs.

Lock On Modern Air combat rocks...
be prepared for a stiff learnign curve and system requirements...

wasnt happy with this game till i built my new CPU now its insane...

being able to run at 16x12 with everything even heat blur maxed makes the game insane...

How would LOMAC run on a Barton 2800 and a 9700 Pro with 1GB mem? Sounds like a cool sim although watching the vids made it appear as if the planes are flying on invisible rails. You guys ever play Parsoft's A-10 Attack! ? That sim had some killer stick feel although graphics were untextured.

definalty not on rails...

this is supposed to be a hyper realistic sim...
it is hard to fly with a 1 joystick no HOTAS system.. im constantly adjusting trims and radar and everything else... its definatly a PITA to fly at times...

but it is very cool...

Just got the demo of LO-MAC...not very impressed at all, especially when taxing, it especially has that sterile railroad feel without any bumps, lumps in the tarmack and the air. I can say the same for FS2004 although it's getting there and has much improved since '98. I have the CH USB Yoke, Flightstick and pedal. I also have 2+ years of real flight experience in single engine piston aircraft. (Aerospatiale TB-9, Cessna C-172R and Piper Arrow) While I cannot say much about the fighter jet's flight performance accuracy (since I've never flown em) it doesn't have the true 'wrestle with the stick to keep the plane afloat' feel that Parsoft's A-10 sim had and that's a real shame because that sim is so old without texture mapped graphics! Even with the fly-by-wire systems used in these jets, there are still bumps to be felt and corrected in an advanced sim. I can't imagine any real pilot to be satisfied with these packages yet, although things have greatly improved since the last few years..
As far as LO-MACs avionics go, very cool. Everything still functions as you pan around in 3D. That's something I haven't seen in a PC flight sim and very impressed by it. Graphics are pretty cool too.
Man I gotta dig out A-10.... It's somewhere in the 3000+ pile of CD's I have...arrgh!

pretty funny as real fighter pilots wrote and tested Lomac =P

I flew the Real 25 million dollar F/A-18 Simulator at NAS Cecil Field and it flew very similar to the F15 model in Lomac..
if you want the bumpy feeling try the MiG29 or the Su27 the russian fighters are not fly by wire and require ALOT of pilot input...
the demo sucks BTW =P

re: pretty funny *snip*

That's just marketing talk CV, every flight sim ever created has that statement somewhere on the box or website.

LOMAC and IL2:FB are the top sims of their genre right now and probably will be for some time.

But, F4 has a massive fan base that has tons of mods that make it hyper-realistic... even more than LOMAC.

I still don't think that MSFS-COF can't be beat for civy sims. I love the ATC... other than its long drawn out vectoring.

Both are great little sims but dated. If you can get them in the bargin bin for $5 might be worth your while.

I loved the damage modeling in A-10. :)

Don't judge LOMAC based on the demo... There have been numerous enhancements made since then... It's the best sim in it's genre.

If you want the ultimate in stick and rudder action, then try IL-2 FB/AEP. The ME109 will give you plenty of it's notorious ground handling design flaws and commanding it to a 3-point landing is very convincing; not to mention some good ACM. THe damage/physics models in this sim are way beyond anything that's been done before. Also, the virtual cockpits on the ME110 and the JA8 are fantastic!

And... make sure to get a Track IR for the best experience. Flying without one of these is as big a jump in realism as going from controling with a keyboard to a joystick...
