What I really enjoy is being able to wirelessly sync at any time stock without needed to do anything with the phone. In my job I constantly get new and important contacts out in the field and sync it and everything is automatically synced to my gmail account so I don't have to worry about losing my contacts.

Okay, can someone give an honest to god opinion whether Android > iPhone? I need to get my dad a phone. He's reasonably technically literate (otherwise the iPhone would be a no-brainer).

The answer really depends on the kind of person you are. I would say that in a nutshell, Android is like Windows PCs and iPhone is like OS X Mac PCs.

You have more options and customization on Android. The highest end Android devices have better specifications than the latest iPhone. I find the four face buttons to make a lot more sense than having a single home button when it comes to interface navigation. Because of all of the power Android gives you, it is possible to mess the device up from settings or installing certain software. Because of how easy it is to get an application put up on the Android Market, there's an uncomfortably large number of defective applications. It's incredibly easy to destroy your battery life because there are a large number of Android apps that do not have a properly configured sleep mode so they consume battery even after you close them. With Android, just like Windows, you have to monitor to some extent what your machine is doing. It is capable of unlimited multi tasking, so if you accidentally leave all of your apps running instead of closing them, you will notice a severe drop in battery life. There are a surprisingly large number of people that don't know the difference between exiting an app with the Home button and exiting an app with the Back button on Android.

iOS devices are easier to use, it's not really possible to mess them up software wise unless you go the jailbreaking route because the app store is locked down tight. You don't really have to worry about running too many things and draining the battery and you don't really have to worry about applications draining the battery at all just by being installed like some do on Android(At least in my experience).

It's my opinion that if you know what you are doing or are willing to learn what you're doing, Android is the better platform. If you want something that works straight out of the box without messing with settings and carefully selecting and testing applications, you want iPhone.

It all depends on his wants, interestes and needs. Take him phone shopping with you and let him decide.

Battery life and 3rd party apps crashing.

Two biggest issues.
And I haven't had any apps crash, yet.

Battery is better on certain phones.
Also, as a general rule if it seems the level goes down too fast, try restarting the phone and sometimes you will get a more accurate reading after its back up.

I've had one app crash on me, age of conquest demo, but other than that, rock solid. to be completely honest, I work at a smartphone shop (not retail, we support enterprises), we're all very into the industry, and my droidX is the envy of just about every iphone user. Even the guy who sits next to me, whos the biggest iphone fanboy I've ever seen, was very impressed with my droid X. Biggest thing for me, screen size (meaning i LIKE the screen size, not biggest issue).

My battery life has been just fine. Sure, its no nokia E series or Blackberry, but its definitely not bad. Its my first android phone that I've owned personally, and I really cant find too much wrong with it. At first I didn't like the bump in the top for the camera, but now I love it, helps me hang on to it (i have a tendency to destroy phones :D)

iPhone4 is the only one with good battery life. All before had the same as everyone else. Also people who installed iOS4 on their 3G are having crashes and TONS of problems and crappy performance on it.

I love my Dx, I never had a program force close on me when on 2.1, with the froyo leak since its not a finished OS so some programs do close, but my battery life is even better on 2.2.

7:15am to 3pm with some normal use 80%. Loving this so much.

I don't think I will ever fall into the "normal use" category.

The only time I'm messing with my phone is when I'm sleeping

I guess I will just chime in with my experiences:

Got a Droid in June. 2nd day, rooted and put an early Froyo leak onto it (FRF84). Have ended up on Bugless Beast 0.4 for now, but that is subject to change. Have plowed through various kernels, roms, themes etc. Pretty happy for now. Also as far as battery life goes, I am running around 36 hours now on a charge with relatively light use (half dozen calls maybe 30 minutes, dozen texts or so, half hour worth of browsing, intermittent twitter/facebook checking, some map lookups).

Also it has taken a beating so far and is hanging in there :p
edit: oh and I overclock the shit out of it :D

LOL, I just made an adapter for my micro sim so I can use it on my iPhone 3G, and hacked the APN so I have a mini iPad now, (data only iPhone).

IMHO, crappy 3rd party apps and battery life are the biggest problem with the Android OS, I've used every OS since 1.5 on a G1, Nexus One, Incredible, and hacked HD2...

Running an original Droid here since December, currently on 2.2 (installed via over the air update). No serious gripes at all, and the only minor ones have to do with very occasional UI stutter which seems to have gotten better with the 2.2 update.

I'd be perfectly happy with an iPhone 4 if it were on Verizon. Where I live in San Jose, AT&T service is crappy with frequent dropped calls and occasional text messages not going through. This is not specifically an iPhone thing, I had the same issues on a BB Pearl.
