what are some cars with quiet interiors?

I was driving around in my old saturn today and realized it's kinda loud. I was like, what's the point of putting a high-end audio system in if the car is going to have this kind of background noise? I have a friend who had a newer honda civic/accord (can't remember which), and it was dead quiet, you could barely tell it was on when you were inside it. what are the quietest cars you've been in?

my dads Maxima has a quiet interior... bigger cars generally seem to be quieter. probably has something to do with build quality :p

I dont find Honda's quiet at all.

I was in my friends ~96 Maxima with ~110k miles, very nice and pretty quiet.

My exhaust is fairly loud in my Topaz, but my system can easily drown it out, even while doing WOT pulls in 4th gear :)

Sometimes it gets old listening to the stereo and I just want to drive and think or enjoy the view, but the car's noise gets a little grating after awhile. Granted my car is a little order and not in great condition. I've noticed bigger cars are more stable at high speeds too. Like on the highway, my car has a lot more shake and give than bigger cars like grand marquees and stuff, which is nice. Then again, my saturn can park in just about any parking space :)

I test drove all kinds of used cars that I could afford ($15k and under) last summer and ended up getting a 2003 Buick Regal. It was the quietest one I drove out of Toyotas, Hondas, Nissans, etc...didn't try Lexus.

The test I put them through was driving them down a road with potholes and broken pavement....the Buick won and the only close second was the Maxima I drove.

No doubt. Interiors are completely silent. You can actually hear the stereo without turning it up at highway speeds.

I completely agree on this one. I have an Audi A4, and I have various friends and family that have a MB S 600, a BMW 745i, a 330i, a CLK 500, and several other high-end cars. My gf's IS300 has without a doubt the quietest interior out of all of them (even the S and the 7).

Some people bash Lexus for being boring but one thing they do right is the interior of the car. If I'm going on a road trip, there is no other car I would like to have. I've driven an M3 for 300 miles straight and that was an unenjoyable experience. It really was a chore with the noisy interior and buzzing from the engine.

One time I was driving home with some friends in my GS300 and my wife tells asks me if I saw the look on the face of the woman in the Corvette I just passed. I said not really. She said she had a surprised look on her face because I blew by her so quickly. I look down and I notice I'm going over 100mph. I couldn't even tell it was so quiet.

Yup, I'm with you there. I drove from LA to SF with my friend in his M5, and even at 80 mph in sixth it's not very quiet. Only other car I would vouch for in terms of long-distance cruising is my aunt's S600. Man, Mercedes makes some comfortable seats. Heated, ventilated (butt fan), and massaging. Just have to try to stay awake :p

aren't Lexus's kind of higher-end cars? I want something I can drive to college and not have to worry about. my saturn is a worry-free car, hehe.

I can hardly have a conversation in my Saturn when I'm at highway speed. Everything in the damn interior rattles and the road noise is horrible. '99 SL with 160K. The engine / tranny have been great but I wouldn't even think of owning another one.

You asked about quiet cars not cars under $15K in your title. ;)

Hmm...problem is, there are a number of things that can contribute to noise in the car. Soundproofing, door seals (which is directly related to build-quality), rattling/loose fixtures in the car (another build-quality issue), suspension quality (smoother ride = less rattling), etc. etc. The higher-end cars (Lexus, Infiniti, BMW, MB, Audi, etc. etc.) have better soundproofing and much better build quality.

In terms of less expensive cars, the new Camrys are pretty quiet. My gf's sister has one and they're nice to drive. Great gas mileage, too, on the I4s.

You do realize M3 is a sport car? It has a stiff suspension and BMW didn't try to make it quiet, they tried to make it lighter (so it can go faster) by cutting materials. You cannot compare M3 to a family car.

The New Accord Hybrid has built in sound cancelling circuitry inside the cabin.

well, I don't mean price-wise, I just mean perception-wise. I don't want to show up to school in a wicked nice car when everybody else is driving beaters and have the car ripped off. That and my $7/hr job might not like me paying a big car payment every month lol. Do they make any non-fancy quiet cars? :D

Hmm, I have a Saturn also, and it, too is very loud. I thought there was something wrong with it. When I'm driving there's a constant hum of road noise coming from the rear wheels, it resonates through the car.

Really?

I am just giving an example of the differences in design philosophy.

I take a car service home almost each night (fringe benefit from working over 12 hours a day) and they have many 7s and S classes and one LS430 in the fleet. The 7s and S500s are definitely noisier than the Lexus. All the drivers agreed, its just a matter of what the manufacturers want. BMW will sacrifice a little quietness and ride comfort for better performance. MB is a little more luxury oriented than BMW. Lexus sacrifices performance for comfort. Theres nothing wrong with any of the philosophies. Its a matter of taste.

I've got a 325i and used to have the GS and there were times I wanted to blast it with a 5 speed manual and there were times I wanted to just lay back and be able to listen to the radio on a long trip. It was good to have a choice. However, I think its well known that Lexus makes some of the quietest cars available. I certainly think so.
