1) Grateful Dead
Their longevity and abundance of great songs makes them the best band ever.

2) Led Zeppelin
Without a doubt the best rock band. I'd bet most people have heard and could recognize (if only by sound) at least 15 of their songs.

3) The Doors
Great lyrics and they had an original sound. Lack of songs due to Morrison's death is their weakness.

Other bands or singers I've always liked are Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Lynyrd Skynyrd, AC/DC, Eric Clapton, and George Thorogood.

after that, its filled with bands like Steel Train, Green Day, Echo And The Bunnymen, Longwave, Sigur Ros, Northstar, stuff like that.
