What are safe temps?

Too hot. Not to the point that it's immediately dangerous, but it is likely to reduce the lifetime of the chip and there's a higher probability of errors and data loss and crashes. Under 60C is the general point that is acceptable, 50 or less is what most people strive for.

I put a Delta fan on there and its still in the mid 60s. I can't deal with that noise though. I just cleaned the case of dust earlier this week. I don't know what else to do.

It's not stock, but I can't remember the exact name anymore. I have 2 Sunon case fans, and 2 that came with the case (Antec). I mixed em up in the front and back. The CPU fan is a Taisol (sp).

Do you have the fronts set as intakes and the rears set as exhaust? What heatsink is it? What direction does the heatsink fan blow?

If it's been a long time since you've applied the heatsink, maybe you should reseat it with fresh thermal compound. I've had high temps due to a heatsink not applied well before.

Could perhaps the TIM have worn out somewhat? 1ghz T-Bird is an older machine, and if there's only air between, it ain't going to cool that well ...

Just a thought.

TIM?

I actually just applied some compound a few days ago when I cleaned out the system. My XP 1800+ burnt out on me, so I'm using my old T-Bird until I get something new.

Yikes, that seems like its much too high. Whats your ambient room temp? Your heatsink might be seated incorrectly.

Is it an Asus ? They issued bios fixes for exagerated temp readings on some older mbs.

I did run a T-bird at 70+ for an entire summer, and nothing happened.

I don't think this is your problem if you've already taken off the HSF a few times, but I'll add it anyway. I had 79 degrees at 100% load with my 1700+ because the HSF was mounted backwards... after turning it round and mounting it a bit more securely, I was down to 39. Less with the case off 😛

I dunno, the way you got a lower temperature by putting on a more powerful fan sounds similar to what I had. Even with the HSF on completely wrong, I could get down in the low 50s with a desktop fan blowing across the CPU. It sounds like it's not on correctly, because that was what happened to me 😛

Probably completely wrong but I just thought I'd add it. I never had any instability at those huge temperatures, but running something like SETI just isn't as fun when you know your cpu is slowly burning up 🙁

*Update*

The CPU was actually getting up to 73C after awhile. So I just shut it off. Today I took off the HSF again, cleaned off all of the compound on the CPU and HSF, and then reapplied. The computer has been running SETI for about 30 mins and is steady at 63C. Not great, but I can live with it.

I just got a Vantec Aeroflow for my Athlon 2400XP yesterday and my temps haven't gone above 44C while gaming and I idle at 40C. I also have 4 case fans, 2 intake and 2 exhaust.

That's about what I'm running on my 2.1GHz 2600+ . 40-42* idle or light processes and 45-49* running Prime 95 and similar
