What are safe temps for the 4870?

I've got my 4870 cooled by the artic cooling S1. And its being cooled passively no fan. I've got zalman heatsinks on all the memory. But I don't have any on the vrm's. Using gpuz my gpu temp is about 64 idle and about 80 load which is still better than stock. But for the vrm's with the newest version of gpuz it shows the vrm's at 90 idle. What is the safe operating temp for those vrm's?

Welcome to anandtech Amber where overclocking and temperature monitoring is the only game that matters.

i've probably spent more time in cpuz/gpuz/everest/ & bios than in cod4 & doom3. and more time browsing AT then all of them together. LOL.

lame.

No because at the back of his mind he is always worried about what hes gonna do if that card blows. I am sure it has become a common worrying thing ever since crysis wrecked the computers at nasa.

To be honest that is pretty much what I am worried about. I know these cards are designed for high heat, but their's always that little thought in the back of my mind "Man is this thing blows I'm screwed" I ordered some of these from newegg last night. They look like they'll do the trick on the vrm's http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16835887017

If I were you I'd use Thermalright HR-03 GT cooler- it will surely drop the temps by 30 to 40° without a fan. You have an option to attach a 80/92mm fan which is very handy if you want to overclock/voltmod it, just make sure you use a 3rd party epoxy to stick the ram sinks.

Then he should stick his fan back on instead of running it passive. It makes a fairly big difference, especially since he has no VRM heatsinks.

Why are people worried about their card blowing up when they have warranty? Cards have a higher chance of blowing up when users mess around with it.

Like i did with my 3870 x2 and voltage mod..

Anyhow i have 2x4850's with s1 and z1 on them they work great and i also did OC the 4850 with the stock cooler "Before the FAN control string was introduced" and got a stable temp of 94C-97C without any crash's what so ever... I think the clock was at 655-660!!!
