I got a conroe preordered...

1) Waiting for a 965 mobo offer for MSI,ASUS, or DFI

2) got a lead on a 600 OCZ powerstream used

3) (2) 300gb seagates in Raid 0

4) possible water setup if I think heat is holding me back

So that leaves me with what DDR2....

A) What are ppl looking for??? DDR2 800 or DDR2 667???

B) what is a perfect match for E6600?? Isn't it actually DDR2 533???

C) from early testing does it seem like the conroe uses the extra bandwidth?? Does it care about cas timings as much?? cas 4 or cas 5 or if DDR2 533 even cas 3??

Give me your thoughts...

Ok my 1st post.

Personally i would be getting some of ..... This

But i dont think i could afford it. Otherwise i would go with the higher frequency stuff, probably DDR2 800. Overclocking, the extra headroom would probably be well appreciated. Especially, as the FSB wall for these chips seems to be around 1600Mhz which matches up with DDR 800.

Anyway if you are not overclocking it that much you can mess around with the ratios to get the best performance out of it.

Go for the higher speed stuff whatever you do. That way if you are overclocking at least you know it is rated to go that high.

Just as an aside what motherboards are going to be good for overclocking these chips?

Go with DDR2 800mhz. DDR2 533 is default and it would work.
If you intent to overclock your CPU, then DDR2 800mhz will allow you to do so.
You'll be able to push your CPU anywhere from 2.4 to 4ghz

The CAS does have a small effect. If you can, go with CAS 4 (CAS 3 is way too expensive)

How much are you going to spend on the ram?

I'm planning on picking up 2gb of DDR2-800. I'll probably buy it before Conroe ships, because prices may go up in the near future. They'll go back down, of course, but I don't wanna have to buy it when it's more expensive.

I'm looking at some OCZ Gold DDR2-533 Value for an E6400. I just can't justify 100$ for 2MB of cache, plus that 100$ will get me a 7900GT over a 7600GT.

Just like with A64s, there's a balance of benefit between frequency & timings.

Read (if you haven't already):
http://www.behardware.com/articles/623-10/intel-core-2-duo-test.html

However, it seems that balance is skewed toward frequency more than timings.

I'd personally be looking for some DDR2-800 or faster, or perhaps DDR2-667 @ really tight timings @ the lowest.

This is a kit i'm considering, since it seems it will do DDR2-800 @ 4-4-4 if lower frequency is needed to match up dividers.

I've been looking around for awhile and will NOT get anything less than 800mhz and 444 timings. That is just me of course. The DDR2 memory will last most people a long time since that will be the dominant memory for awhile. I figured I would just find the best deal possible on some decent memory so it will last through most of my future upgrades. I am not buying AM2 or Conroe right away, so I have no need to be in a big hurry.

Great link.....That settles it I will get the best deal on 4-4-4-12 DDR2 800....

i will be shooting for 3.6ghz+ from a E6600...9x266 right??? so 9x400 would work with DDR2 800 with no dividers and a 1600FSB...

I also am going to order as soon as possible so I dont get caught up in a buying frenzy...

OK I am going for these....should be some room if I go past 3.6ghz...Ultimately I want to hit 3.6ghz and do some testing against my dual 265 opterons...I hear 4ghz and the 445FSB may be very difficult to get on boards. I know we haven't seen 965 chipset mobos so far so maybe they can hit this without mods...

Here is my PC collection...The 1st 2 setups I have all the parts...just haven't put together the 265's yet...Have all parts and getting the cpus this week

#1 (folding box)

(2) Opteron 265's w/ retail HSF
Iwill Dk8X AMD8131 chipset Mobo
1gb (2x512) Corsair XMS plat. Low Latency cas 2,3,2,6 ECC
Gainward 6800GT (420/1100) AGP w/ NV5 Silencer
80gb Seagate SATA HDD
NEC-3500 DL DVD writer
Antec Titan case w/ 550wat TruePower 2.0 PSU

****the 6800GT agp is overkill now that I have the pci-e one...may sell and get a decent AGP card for cheap to do basic 2d and very limited 3d

#2 (cadd workstation/folding box)

(2) Opteron 270's @ 2.4 to 2.6ghz (find out Friday of next week)
(2) Thermalright XP-90AL w/ 90mm Panaflo's
Asus K8N-DL
2gb (4x512) Corsair XMS plat. Low Latency cas 2,3,2,6 ECC
Evga 6800GT (450/1150) PCI-e w/ NV5 Silencer softmodded to Quadro FX4400
NEC 3550 DVD-/+R/RW
(2) WD 250GB SATA II in Raid 0
(1) Samsung 300GB SATA HDD
Antec Titan case w/ 600wat OCZ Powerstream PSU

#3 (Multimedia machine/ plaything/ folding box)

(1) Core 2 Duo E6600 @ ~3.6ghz*
Intel 965chipset MOBO
2gb (2x1gb) Gskill DDR2-800 cas 4-4-4-12*
ATI X1300-x1600 PCI-e 256mb
NEC 3550 DVD-/+R/RW*
Liteon LT163 DVD-Rom (already own)
(2) Seagate 300GB SATA II in Raid 0
Chenming SOHO Case w/ 500+ PSU

collectively 20ghz - 23.6ghz in 10 cores

The Conroe system with astericks is stuff I have now bought or know for sure what I am getting....

No.....This is DDR 2 God

I think it is overkill for me, as I find getting 500 or 4.5ghz from a E6600 as being impossible....

Do you have to make my understanding of overclocking so obviously wrong? Atleast ACT like you believe me so I can get my free sticks of RAM :p

You won't regret G.Skill Duvie, I love their memory and use it in all my builds....

I have used their sticks in the past.....They have great tech support as well....I didn't even hesitate to buy them...

I think I got my PSU dialed in and the HDDs....just need the MOBO now....I want 965 chipset and not the 250 dollar Asus mobo...I wont be running SLI either. Just give me nice onboard sound, Lan, and plenty of OCing options...

mid 300 for cpu....not too bad I can swallow that...

under 200 for ram....I like that for 2gb

over 200 for mobo potential....pissed as heck...should be around 150 IMO...
