What are .PAR files?

Parity files, you need a program called mirror.exe.
with a .par you can reconstruct a missing rar or ace from the warez or porn you downloaded

PARs are used along with rars (as far as I've seen). I don't remember exactly how it works...BUT basically you can use ONE PAR file per ONE RAR that's bad or missing to recover the data on rar file. Somehow it recovers data based on all the other rars or something. I read a real good description on it once in the newsgroups but forgot the down and dirty workings of it. (I think it kinda works like RAID 5 or something) Anyway, you can use SmartPAR with the par files which will check to see if all the rars are present and working and try to recover any that are not. (provided you have enough PAR files).

Why? you ask.
Well, atleast as far as newsgroups are concerned, they're for everyone's convienience. People posting don't have to upload a billion different fill requests, and the people downloading don't have to request their specific fills. (they just have to hope that the poster uploads enough PAR files for their particular situation)

That's the jist of it. Do a google search for more/better info.

a search in http://groups.google.com/ is better

you dont need the *.P files unless you are missing a file, or have corrupt ones.

generally, you need MORE *.P files than missing\corrupt *.R files

btw, it does work. but its a pain sometimes to have to download them =\

ahh..thx

so if i have all the .par files, but only 10% of the .rar files, can i reconnstruct? (apparently, most of the rar files are incomplete/corrupt on earthlink's news server)

no, like someone said earlier, for every missing/bad .rar file, you'll need 1 .par file.. so if you have 10 .rar files that are either missing or are missing segments, you'll need 10 .par files to recover.

so you're probably out of luck with whatever you're trying to download... unless other people are complaining on more reliable news servers that the files are coming up missing/bad. isp news servers tend not to be the best ones out there..

your chances of recreating non-existing files falls with the number of corrupt\missing files you have. and you cannot recover more than what *.P files are offered. if you are missing too many files, ask for a repost. par files are only effective if you are missing a few files, compared to the posted par collection. There is no magic to par files. if there was, there would be no need for par files.

anyway, i have used smartpar.exe or mirror.exe to recover from a par archive.
