what are my salary requirements for being a comp tech?

i've been sending out resumes for computer tech jobs (you know the basic workstation admin crap), and i've been asked for salary requirements. what's the going rate? i don't want to shoot myself in the foot by asking for way too much or cheat myself by asking for too little. also, i assume that since they say "salary," i should put a yearly sum... note: i have some comp sci college education but no degree. i have 5 years experience doing workstation stuff on my own, as my own buisness.

edit: i charged $50 an hour by myself, and i know i can't make near that in a buisness, but would $20/hour (something like $35k a year) be too much?

Here in Iowa you'd be laughed at if you said $20 an hour for entry level stuff, especially if you were getting benefits. Can't speak for CA though.

Not a chance in hell you're going to get that in this market.

perhaps me meant what he takes home. for $20/hr... you'll prolly take home around $30-$33k if you get $20/hr depending on your tax stuff.

how do you get that?

$20 x 40 = 800 x 4 = 3200 x 12 = $38,400

That's not how you figure it:

20x40x52 = $41,600

There are 52 weeks in a year, not 48.

The quick way - Double your hourly salary, add a couple of zeroes, increase it by a few percentage points and you're going to be pretty close.

Be warned though, if you aren't getting what you're worth you will be pissed.

sweet, the median salary for my job (second year analyst in finance) is about $74k. too bad living in nyc costs already about half that much 🙁
