What are good robust 17" laptops ?

I'm in the market for a laptop. Currently T60 and the macbook pro are the potential condidates. I'm now thinking about getting a 17" laptop.
Weight is not a concern, and I wont be moving around with the laptop much. Build quiality IS important. I was thinking about getting a dell, but have been hearing very bad things about the build quality. I will be doing quite some software development so keyboard quality etc needs to be very good. And also, laptop needs to be sturdy.

Are there any such laptops ? Or is thinkpad the only option ? Macbook pro has a 17 version but its out of my price range. (<=1650 after coupons etc).

Is Asus a good brand ? Robust laptops ?
Also, whats the difference between XGA+ and SXGA+ screens ?

Asus is one of the best brands to buy in terms of quality. They are a major manufacturer of notebooks in the world, but mostly in the ODM sector, meaning they make them for other companies such as Apple, Dell, etc...

XGA+ vs. SXGA+ is screen resolution. Since you are looking at Wide-screen notebooks, it is technically WXGA+ and WSXGA+
WXGA+ on a 17" is 1440x900
WSXGA+ on a 17" is 1680x1050

thumbs up for building your own laptop! this is a hardware forum so i find it strange that there aren't more people building whitebooks and customizing them.

I love my Asus 🙂

If you're down to spend $2000 on a laptop, i'd go with the W2J from Asus. It's absolutely gorgeous.

oh my bad didn't know you were on a budget. There are other 17" models from Asus. Can't think of any off the top of my head.

My dad's also looking for a 17 inch widescreen notebook.

Anyone know which models have the best looking and highest quality LCD screens?

(and are 15.4 inch widescreen generally better than the 17 inch widescreens, or is quality comparable?)

I was impressed by Toshiba Satellite M65. Big sucka! Nice unit but too big for me to carry around. Excellent for desktop only.

Take a look at the HP business line of notebooks. My dad recently brought one home from work and it was a very nice laptop. I think it was the nc 9XXX. Very nice latop, nice screen and big keyboard. If you are going to college, you can get an "education" discount which amounts to free ram, hd, screen upgrades. The 17" HPs start at around 1300 and include the mobility x1600.

How do I get the education discount (I am indeed a student) ?
The thing I dont like about the nc9xxx is they offer only 533 speed ram, not the newer 667.

EDIT - I registered with their EPP program, unfortunately they only seem to give discounts on home & Home offfice products ? And that too about 5%.
The nx9430 is a business laptop, can I still get some discount ?
