What are codes on a processor for?

I see them alot posted on this forum. like a whole bunch of digits and letters, Im assuming its something to do with overclocking, but where would you make use of thee codes?
 
Generally, they are used to determine about when the processor was manufactured. Certain batches of CPU's can sometimes be better overclockers than others, so this is used to see what batch the particular cpu comes from.

The codes contain useful information regarding the CPU. For example, the voltage, the FSB speed, model/family, cache size, and date of manufacture.

Go HERE, it's an AMD cpu identifyer chart that tells how to "read" the codes.
