Braces suck donkey balls.

After I got them, my mouth was so sore I could hardly eat. I lived on mashed potatoes, applesauce and pudding for at least 2 weeks. After that, it was ok. Although the occasional tightenings sucked too. But when you get them off, you feel like a million bucks. I couldn't stop smiling and running my tounge over my teeth.

I've had braces for so long I can't remember what life was like without them. Just over five years. I've grown used to them, so they don't hurt or feel funny anymore.

Yes, it hurts when you first get them and get them adjusted. Eating is very painful. But that's been covered.

I've always had problems with the braces abrading the inside of my mouth, or sometimes the wire will stick out of the back brace a little bit and punctures my cheek. Wax comes in handy for that. It's not much fun but you get used to it.

There are many things invisalines CANNOT fix, so people with those problems can't get them.

Well when they first place the divider in the back of your teeth to make room for a ring later, that makes it hurt for a few days. Then when they place the actual braces on it will hurt for a few more days. During these days of pain eating can be torture. It will hurt for a few days each time they tighten the braces which happens almost every month. For some people the pain can be extreme.

On a side note I know someone who had to use this thing to widen his mouth before he couldn't get braces. They places it on the roof his mouth and he had to use a key and insert it into some slot. When he turned the key the thing on the roof of he mouth got larger and pushed his teeth outmore. I would like to say each time he turned the key, he yelled so loud. I never heard someone yell in so much pain. What he had to do is incredibly painfull.

lmfao, some of you are acting like its one of the most painful things around.

I had braces(almost didnt need them but mom wanted ma t33th perfectly straight!) for abuot a year maybe a little over.
Imma try and dig a pic of me when I had them. First few weeks , you will feel lots of seems like "pulling" yes its sore, no you wont cry, or shouldnt. All I ate was chips ahoy cookies after being in the microwave(some good stuff btw).

After the first few weeks of getting them put on, its back to normal except if your braces cut your mouth up, I never had to use wax but you better if you get cut up! Every time you go in to get them tightened and what not, it is sore for aday or two but not as bad when you first get them on. About the gf thing, I didnt have a hard time dating then. the day you get them off it will feel wierd as hell, felt like I didnt have any teeth, slimey as hell. Listen to what they say man cause if you dont take care of your teeth while you have them on, youll regret it.

Its not that bad, if you can handle a little pain then dont worry about it.

Braces suck... and then even after braces you might have to wear retainers for a long time. I lost mine and never got them replaced since they cost so much money. My teeth haven't changed THAT much. ;)

dude they suck. carry a brush with you every where you go. they will be irratating if you sleep on your face cause when you wake up you will have brace imprints in your inner cheek. Your teeth will hurt after each visit to the orthadontist...just be prepared for 2-3 years of hell.

I'm approaching my one year anniversary with 'em (I just turned 22). Trust me, they are NOT FUN for the first couple months. You will regret it every second of every day and have pleasant thoughts of taking a pliers and straightening your teeth with that. After a few months, you start to get used to it and don't really notice them all that much. I hardly feel a thing when I get them adjusted anymore. I used to not be able to eat solid food for a week after getting them adjusted, but now it's down to about 1 day, if that. I would say that it is worth it though. About a week ago I looked at pictures of me when I was 18 and almost shuddered at what my teeth looked like. Now they look 115% better and I just have one tooth that is being a pain and moving slow. All the others are right where they need to be. I would recommend pain killers of some kind for the first few nights. The first day I got them on, I felt nothing all day. I thought that everyone was just messing with me about the pain and stuff. At almost exactly midnight, I woke up almost screaming at the pain that had entered my mouth.

Just keep in mind that it gets better. It won't seem like it at the time, but you'll get used to it.

Cripes....I was currently thinking about braces, but after this thread.......

How long is the usual time to have braces? My teeth aren't that jacked....does it also depend on age (older you are, the longer it takes)?

I think mine were around three years... then you add in retainers.

I'm 27 and getting braces next month. I could have had them when I was in high school but I didn't want to look like a dork. That was very stupid because I was a dork already.

I was suppose to get braces when I was in high school.
It was actually the very next visit that they were going to put it on but I never went.

Fastforward 5 yrs later till my next dental visit. I had to fix so many things that braces wasn't a priority.

Fastforward 9 yrs later(which is recently), braces was not going to be the answer.
After getting all the neccesssary work done, I decided to go for the comestic route.
$5K later, I finally have a nice smile.

At my age, braces were going to be hassle so I'm glad I went for the quick fix.

I had my braces for 2 years, got them on as an adult during university for the reason that my wisdoms hadn't yet come down, so the dentist advised to hold off for a bit. Finally my wisdoms came down (and even then, partially), so he sent me to the orthodontist. Since my mouth is small, I required two molars to be removed to make space for when the shifting of teeth ocurred. The needle hurt like a beatch.

It's a strange feeling in your mouth, especially when they are tightened at each appointment the tension is so great that you want to go mental. It feels as though your entire head is in a vice. And then you start to wear elastics thus creating more tension. You have to train yourself to eat on one side of your mouth, cut up every piece of food you eat (I couldn't bite into apples for the entire time) or else I'd cry because it hurt so badly.

It hasn't quite been 2 years since they've been off and I still wear a retainer at night on the top row. As for the bottom, I have a small wire that serves as a retainer, glued to the inside so they don't shift--I don't even know it's there. I wanted one put in for my top row but the ortho advised against it.

It's definitely worth the pain. Most people have their awkard years through middle school or highschool, for me it was university but it didn't really stop me from anything. I dated and went out and studied...lead a normal life except that I didn't smile a lot because all you could see was metal!
