What are alternatives to SB ?

What are alternatives to SB and how do they compare to price/performance ? I figured SB is not save now (due to intel issue) until April. Also if I'm not mistaken the previous chipset had tri channel so better memory performance...

I asked the same question, seems everything else is a step backwards unless you wanna spend a $1000 for an EXTREME processor...

Yea but i've not tracked the various chipsets since i purchased an e8400. Which chipset is recommended for the non SB builds ?

Just get the previous i7 Processors and boards. It's not like they are so slow they can't do anything.

I am going to return my 2600K and Asus Pro P67 board to Tiger Direct. Then I'll go back to what I used to have which was rock solid and very fast. A I7 870 and P55 Chipset motherboard...

their is no alternative, the entire market has just taken a HUGE step backwards.

No, the "entire" market is just fine. This is going to affect a few hundred thousand enthusiasts around the world, and put a LOT of hurt on OEMs like HP and Dell, but it's not the end of the world. P55 and X58 are quite adequate for the near future.

Edit: I take back some of the above (as s1155 has vanished)... Having to do a "re-launch" in a few months if not just embarrassing, and will cost a great deal of money. The market is paused.

Same limitations.

Make me wonder why all the SB test were done on CS4 when CS5 was out long ago.

Crippling the I7xx platform to boast SB how sad

The issue only affects SATA 2 ports. For example, Asus P8P67 boards have 4x SATA 3.0 ports (2 off the chipset and 2 off the Marvell controller).

So unless you plan on going with more than 4 DVD/SSD/HDDs, I would still grab a SB processor as it's so much superior to everything else. Asus also has advanced replacement for motherboards in the first year of warranty. ASus will send you a new board before you send them your old one. Once the fix is available, you'll have your new board and barely any downtime.

Much superior to everything else in Benches. Thinking like a true gamer. But not everyone uses a pc for gaming. In video editing and such SB is inferior to the I7 9xx series due to its lack of bandwith

dammit intel! you broke the golden rule: no givesies backsies!

it's really just the same market as it was before sandy bridge...i bet amd is having a party like no other. maybe this will spur them to launch bulldozer sooner? it'd be really cool if bulldozer came out before sandy bridge (re)launches...or hell if they came out at the same time that'd be awesome too.

Why??? It's a 5% chance over 3 years. The chances of something going wrong in 2 months is very damn low.

Although I do wonder why you upgraded from an i7 to an...i7 in the first place.

I'm so glad I was able to snatch 2500K. A big deal for Intel, but no difference for my uses.

Actually what they should be doing is take their time to ensure flaws aren't encountered in light of the news.

It's new chipset shipment in late Feb and full ramp in April, the two are kinda different. 😛

Not sure why people keep saying AMD should release AM3+ or bulldozer right now to capitalize...I'm pretty sure if they were in a releasable state they'd already be here. Developing new technology and sitting on it is not a very effective business strategy in any market. 😛 At most AMD could release a horseshit press release and then paper launch early.

I didn't even see that about just the sata ports being messed up. Well I have 1 sata my crucial ssd which is on the sata 6 port which is not affected. And I use an external dvd burner so I'm good she's a keeper then..

I think I'll wait a bit; the 8800 gts is kind of slow but I want to wait for the 6950 to drop a bit more before biting. So apr I'll start all over 🙂 I'm not sure the e8400 is much of a bottleneck at this point; my concern (in part) is the driver for the 6950 is a higher load on the cpu so when I upgrade the gpu is a good time to upgrade the cpu.

Hum. Maybe this will also give a chance for the vendors to fix their p67 bios so things will run smoother come Apr.

and yes this is strictly a game machine; I could care less about non-gaming performance on a windows box.

Not sure which video editing benches you are referring to? If i7 9xx series benefited from memory bandwidth, i7 875k wouldn't be within a hair of their performance. I only see 6-core 12 threaded 970/980X series that are able to outperform the 2600k in video encoding. It's really hard to beat the value of either 2500k or 2600k in the $200-300 price range imo.

This article on our site covered it well. I wouldn't be surprised if others believe that the actual motherboards themselves have a 5-15% chance of failure.

i didn't say they should jump the gun and release prematurely...i just think that if they have the opportunity/ability to launch bulldozer sooner without compromising it, they should.
