For some reason I doubt that HL-2 runs flawless on a 5200, unless it uses DX8

Exactly what is your point? That Nvidia and ATi should stop making faster hardware until the games catch up? That's not how it works.

Even then, you wouldn't be able to run at higher resolutions.

The 1680x1050 resolution of my 2005FPW demands a powerful graphics card.

Exactly. If you're stuck on an old 17" CRT at 1024x768 or something, then obviously high end cards are not necessary for you. However those of us with larger, higher resolution monitors (I have a 2005FPW myself) need something more. It's not just a matter of bragging rights or e-penis length contests - some of us just don't want a slideshow at 1680x1050/1600x1200 or above. ;)

This is the answer to this question.

The other answer is "it's time to buy a new video card now, and do I want to worry if I can play games coming out in the next 12 months well or be done with it"?

I don't have the money to buy the top end graphics cards, if I did, I would probably buy them. But that would also depend on whether or not I'd have the money to waste.

That was a horrible and totally illogical rant. Do you honestly want hardware technology to stop dead in it's tracks and let the software surpass it so that the software runs like crap?

As for the poll... I'm not sure what there is to "buy into." It's not a gimmick... it's not an idea... it's not speculation... it's a new piece of hardware with definate, measurable performance increases over previous hardware. I'm also not sure what you mean by "are you kidding me 24 pipes!!!" It's supposed to be an answer to your question of whether we "buy into" the 7800... but it's phrased as a question, ended with exclamation points. Hmmmm...

ditto...resolution is a key factor. 1920x1200 breaks a lot of cards, and was the only reason I upgraded.

i can run HL2 and GTA:SA on my 2005FP fine with a 6600GT

but Unreal3 on a screen at 1920x1200 will demand a 7800GTX if you want all the eye-candy.

I'd be willing to bet you'll need more than a 7800GTX if you want to run a game based on the Unreal 3 engine at 1920x1200 with ALL the eye candy.

Spend $600 on a card just to play some rehashed and generic-as-ever FPSes? No thanks. Eye candy means nothing to me if the games flat out sucks.

Reguardless of how you feel with the current situation,

HL2 doesn't run maxed out on a Geforce 5200.. Not even @ 1024x768.

It's illogical to think that no one needs the high-end only because you don't need it. Hell, some would think it overkill, but most games I only run 1024x768 on my 6800GT, if only because I cannot stand to have the FPS drop below 60 for even a millisecond in multiplayer gaming. In singleplayer I can pump out whatever rez I want, but I know to play games like BF2 online at 12x10 and higher and never see drops in FPS, you'll need a very highend card. Whether it's never seeing another jaggie or never having another 10 fps slowdown, the highend exists for those who are tired of making a sacrifice in one form of quality or another in their games. For those willing to accept low settings, jaggy edges and abysmal FPS, these solutions are meaningless, yes, but then again that's what XBox is for.

I bought it because I wanted something to complement my 2005FPW in a single card solution, and would last me a year. I also wanted something that ran fast using less power and giving off less heat, because those things are important in my SFF.
