What are AAC files?

My friend just put a lot of good songs on my uncles IPOD and i wanna put them on my computer


They are all in aac format

What should I use to transfer these and WHY are they in aac format to bein with?

AAC is not an Apple proprietary audio format. It's the audio format used by the MPEG-4 standard. Apple uses them because AAC is a superior codec to MP3 (the audio layer from MPEG-1 files).

You can play them in iTunes, or any other media player that supports AAC or MPEG-4.

iTunes can play AAC files just fine. Actually, they are probably in M4A format. If they are in M4P format, that means they are protected songs which were purchased from iTunes directly.

more further clarification ..

AAC is raw audio stream. M4A and M4P are the containers.

to get them on your computer - burn them to a cd and then rip them from the cd ... that is the only way I got around it ... there are probably better ways though

You'll end up re-encoding them, making them sound more like ass.
