What arcade games are popular these days?

The Street Fighter thread got me thinking, do arcades still exist? THe only time I see arcade games is at my local pool hall. The only game I've enjoyed playing recently is Silent Scope. Has anything new come out?

Well, marvel vs capcom is still a staple. Most new arcade games are shooters, but the market is shrinking VERY rapidly. Next thing you know, the only new arcade game that'll be coming out is another DDR.

I was in Vegas last year and checked out an arcade or two hoping for some really cool stuff. Nope. Maybe the home consoles have just become powerful enough that "arcade" quality graphics have no meaning?

Dave and Busters comes to mind.

Yeah, come to think of it, we have a Jillian's around here. However, there aren't any staple arcade games there that'd have me wanting to play it more than once every 6 months. In fact, I think the last time I was at Jillian's, I was playing PacMan, since nothing else excited me. (besides air hockey)

The couple arcades I've seen have gone from 30% pinball, 70% video related in the old days to 90% video related about 10 years ago, and now are adding in games like skeeball and stuff so kids win tickets that they trade in for trinkets, and getting away from the other games.

It sucks how far arcades have fallen...the home market will never be the same, but I miss having numerous places to go for competition and comeradery.

Guilty Gear is popular in some markets, with Marvel vs Capcom 2 being a tourney staple, along with SNK vs Capcom (Chaos)...shooting games are still decently big, with a new Area 51 coming out in the fall or thereabouts.

I wish I lived in SoCal or an area with a good fighting game scene...I'd love to watch the great players and learn...and for those keeping up, Evolution 2004 should be great :D

arcardes arnt popular at all any more unless you like to throw down ddr versus people, thats the only place to find compition for some games. the console market has pretty much destroyed the arcade business(one of the reasons sega fell all the more faster)

what has replaced arcades somewhat is the cyber cafes(bunch of cs junkies really). the arcade i used to go to cleaned out all the old games boxs and set up about 50% of the space for computers to run counterstrike. the rest is daytona/big machines you sit in and ddr/physical games.

I remember hanging out in arcades on a Friday evening back in the early 80's. My favorite games were Asteroids, Space Invaders, Bezerk and Sinistar. That was so long ago. I then got a Coleco-Vision for Christmas, and I was the happiest kid in the world to play games on my TV at home.

I love arcades. But when they want $1 a game its not worth it.

When i lived in Salem, OR there was a arcade called wonderland (i think) that was $1.50 to get in but all the games were $.5-.10 each! i wouild go in with a like $5 and spend the day.

I worked at a store a relative opened, "Lunar Tunes" which was an arcade w/ music and small dance floor for parties and stuff, with pool tables and a bar for food and drinks (no alcohol)... We opened it and it was the most unpopular place in Helen (a tourist attraction town)... Arcades = teh sux. It only took about 4 months and everything was sold and the arcades were moved into a new project (bowling alley). The bowling alley is doing fine right now, and people actually play the old arcade machines...

Man, I LOVE WUDNERLAND! The best one is Avalon in SE Portland. They have $1 movies, pop, ice cream, popcorn and such. I could waste a whole day with just $10. Good times, good times. Maybe I'll have to hit it up when I go back to Portland in a couple weeks. :D

those arcade machine are very expensive and to maintain. why bother? it's great because people get together and have more fun but the games fun factor leave somewhat to be desired.
Their a wasteof moneythat coudl otherwise use to buy you lunch, games imo are just for fun and they suck in the long run.

I miss arcades, but it's just not the same anymore. Unless you live in an area where tournaments are going on, its really not worth even going into what passes for arcades these days. I remember the days of the first Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Killer Instinct, Tekken, Virtual Fighter and finally the pinnacle of all fighting games Marvel vs Capcom 2.

We have a big arcade/bar in MI at Great Lakes mall "Game Works." They mostly have all of the Street Fighter games, MK, VF, old WWF and WWE arcade games. Also they have a lot of racing games like Indy, Nascar and other racing type cars. Not a lot of pinball games only like four.

There best game is a game in which you sit in a chair and you act like you are in a helicopter shooting enemies in different levels of a building. One moment you are at the bottom the next thing you know you shoot up 15~20 ft. in the air while shooting the enemy.

The last time I went to an arcade all they had were a bunch of crappy games that are no comparison to modern PC/console games and very expensive to play (you only get what, a few mins usually).

It was part of a small entertainment center place, they also have go-karts and miniature golf among other things.
