Downloaded what ? LimeWire ? Well just run the bin file and then cd to the directory that you installed it in and type java -jar runlime.jar if it doesn't create a sh run script.

P.S. You don't need to run as root just install it in your home directory.

I suppose all the knowledge about Linux was magically inserted into your brain, right? :p I'm a total Linux n00b - gimme a break. I remember having to figure crap out in Win 3.11... now any version of Windows is like the back of my hand. I'm not used to Linux yet and I haven't been using it much. Bite me!

I use gtk-gnutella.. which uses the same network as Limewire. I prefer the Gtk+ interface over the java one though..

The only major difference is people make bloated installers... In a way that's bad, since you have less control of what's going on. When you're building the whole thing yourself (ie, download the source code and compile it), you truly have complete control of what's happening to your system. Windows does have some things that make it EASIER, but that also compromises your security and privacy.

You just gotta get used to Linux. If you'd never used Windows before, it'd be a royal pain in the ass to use as well. Now I just gotta get used to Linux.... grr

Did you chmod it ? You know give it execute permissions after you downloaded it?

chmod 755 LimeWireLinux.bin

Once you give it the right permissions bring up a terminal and type ./LimeWireLinux.bin or if you are in KDE just select the file and type ctrl+E.

P.S. If you are looking for a good NIX book then I would recommend Your Unix: The Ultimate Guide by Sumitabha Das ( ISBN 0072405007 ). It cost about $65 bucks but it is veeeeeeeery well worth the price. Trust me after you're done reading it you will be using Vi for editing config files and using the terminal for alot of things like FTP, Telnet, IRC, and much....much more.

Thanks for that help - I'll check it out next time I open up Linux. That was probably it. The thing that gets to me with Linux is the lack of good browsers. Even AnandTech looks like ass no matter what browser I use. Can't any browser rival IE? :(

Thanks all for the input.

Oh please... You aren't going to try and argue that a Linux browser is on par with IE? Even Mozilla is not. I run Linux Mandrake 8.1, and I've tried every browser that came with it (several). Sites are designed to work with MS' proprietary crap... not much we can do about that other than code our sites to work nicely with everybody's browsers. But don't try to argue and say that some browser can view everything exactly like IE does... unless there is something I'm missing.

I have used Galeon, Mozilla, Konqueror, Netscape 6.2 and I have yet to notice any major differrences in terms of rendering ability or looks.

Comparing to what? IE? What version did you use? How long did you use it? You must not be a very observant person if you don't notice much difference. There is a huge difference. I've used Galeon, Mozilla, and Konqueror. I haven't tried Nutscrape 6 yet. Should I bother?

They're virtually identical, but Netscape is simpler to set up, and comes with a nice email client and AIM client.
The reason you hear mozilla is better is because you hang out in places like here, where everyone's proud of thier "l33tness" and thinks mozilla is better simply cause it's opensource and not owned by AOL.

Then there's no point in my trying it.
