. Microsoft Security Essential is fail.
Proof?
I have proof of a sort. I think essentials does a decent job but it certainly is not in a league with a full blown pay internet security package. The biggest dangers these days are mostly found in websites that execute malicious code. Essentials does a poor job of protecting against this type of threat. Case in point: 3 weeks ago a facebook friend gets a message from another friend that contains a link purporting to be a youtube video link. When he gets the link he is prompted to install a supposed flash player update. He does so and pow popups galore start flying just as unknown to him, happened to the friend he got the message from. At this point Microsoft Security Essentials starts throwing warnings. A bit late wouldn't you say? Now His infected system sent me the same facebook message that he got. When I tried to open the link however my application would not let me even open the fake youtube page, let alone install the malicious app, and warned me that it was a malicious website and that I should not proceed. My application? Trend Micro Internet security 2009. I paid for this program and have been paying for many years and have yet to find a free app that can hang with it.
