i love how eva fanboys always use the reasoning "you didn't understand it"/"you don't like it because it was too deep for you"/etc... then put down people that didn't like it and pretend/believe they're on some higher mental state of enlightenment or something.

yes it was too deep for me, uh huh... or should i say i'm not insane enough to appreciate it.

opinion: eva is a good series/eva is a bad series
fact: the creator suffered a mental breakdown ~halfway thru the series and had a nice stay at a mental institute/asylum.

take what you want from that fact.:)

<<

<< can't forget to mention eva when you mention any good anime... Neon Genesis Evangelion if you want the full name :) >>

OMFG! DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT watch Neon Genesis Evangelion. I watched all the episodes and the movie, and I wish I could get that time back.
>>

Someone didn't pay attention, or was watching Evangelion for the wrong reasons.

<< Escaflowne is pretty good until the last few episodes, where they screw everything up.

Let's see, a couple more:

Classics:
-Ghosts in the Shell
-Akira
-Ninja Scroll
>>

Pointless, amusingly bad and pointless, respectively.

<< Epic:
-Record of Lodoss War
-Escaflowne
>>

These I'll agree with. But you'll never really want to watch either again, most likely.

<< Mecha:
-Macross Plus
-Gundam Wing (you basically have to like mechs, a lot, and not care too much about story)
>>

*Insert one of tens of thousands of Mecha series here*

<< Humorous:
-Tenchi Muyo
-Slayer Plus
-Super Culture All Purpose Cat Girl (short)
>>

Tenchi Muyo
Tenchi in Tokyo
Tenchi Universe
Tenchi in Love 1 and 2
Tenchi Forever
And I'm forgetting some.

Slayers
Slayers Try
Slayers Next
Slayers Perfect
Slayers Gorgeous
The various Slayers movies and the serieses I'm forgetting about.

Never heard about the cat girl one.

<< Suspense:
-Perfect Blue (VERY GOOD!)
>>

Eh.

<< And come now, let's not forget Dragonball, Dragonballz, and Dragonball GT! >>

Right, suggest the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers of anime for someone who wants good anime. I should kick you in the teeth for that ;)

the intended point of my rant...

everyone is free to have their opinion of an anime. everyone has diff taste, that's a given. disagree with someone concerning their definition of a good anime or bad anime? go ahead, logical/clearheaded reasoning would be a plus also. but definitely no need to get all haughty and condescending when discussing anime. i see this occuring too much amoung anime watchers and fans. respect other's opinions and tastes and move on if you don't agree, no need to insult one's intelligence, etc.

The cat-girl animé dc is referring to is All-Purpose Cat-Girl Nuku Nuku, or just Nuku Nuku.

I agree with Vandread and Noir too, their both great, Noir derserves the title as one of the best animé of 2001, if not the best.
Princess Mononoke as one of the best animated movies (from all countries) ever.

- Oh My Goddess! (OVA and Movie) Another geek-meets-alien-girl animé.
- Tenchi is fun, the OVA and movies are the best. But the last time I saw the OVA it simply didn't seem as fun as it used to be. I've seen it 7 times so far though, so... Maybe I'm just getting too old (not as in age) to appreciate it as much
- Slayers is also fun, but it gets repetitive, at least when you watch 6+ eps per day... It's not that you get tired of it though, you still want to watch "just one episode more".

dc, you answered the question about Nuku Nuku before me, guess I was using to much time to write my answer.

I agree with you on the opinions, everybody should be free to have their own opinion about something. If the majotiry like something and you don't it doesn't mean that you're strange or need to be "corrected". If it were so, then we (animé-fans) wouldn't be here today since we like different things (animé and, since we're on AT, computers too) than the majority of society.

Well dc, I only responded to dci because he destinctly told someone not to watch Eva. Had he just posted what he liked then I wouldn't have commented. This thread is about the quality of anime as is being recommended to someone. The quality of Eva is very good there is no denying this. It has a great plot, great action scenes, amazing character developement, and delves very deep into the religious realm, far past anything I could understand. He then goes on to recommend DBZ, an anime that is simply 1 battle after another with a hero that always wins. The artworks is semi decent in DBZ, but the fact is it is very predictable. Heres the scenario: new badguy appears, goku loses, but by losing goku becomes stronger and defeats badguy, now go back to step 1. There, thats the whole series. I wouldn't have brought up DBZ but I wanted to draw a paralell between what he was recommending and dissing. Personally I wouldn't NOT recommend DBZ, but I don't think its that great of an anime to begin with.

I did not know that the creator of Eva suffered some sort of mental fallback, but I don't go researching every author of every anime. I don't think that fact changes the quality of his work. It is no suprise that every anime thread brings up Eva or the fact that many AMV's have revolved around the series. It is a stepping stone in the history of anime, one no fan should miss, whether you end up liking it or not.

Another note about Noir, it has one of the best soundtracks of any anime I've ever seen. If you end up liking it, get the soundtrack too!

your opinion.

here's mine.
quality of eva is very good? that's an opinion, nothing more.
great plot? i like the overall premise and idea, but implementation was poor imo. espeically the later of the series.
great action scenes? i agree with you there, eyecandy is nice, but eyecandy with a good story is even better.
amazing character developement? it was ok, too bad shinji bugged the hell out of me. uber undecisive wuss isn't my ideal choice for main protagonist :p:)
delves very deep into the religious realm? lol, like lots of other anime, they take western/christian iconography and throw it in without good reason. taking random elements from a religion and then twisting them around to make the backbone of the story doesn't constitute as religiously/spiritually deep anime.

my 2 cents. :)

The quality of Eva is only an opinion to the degree of your standards. Most anime sites review on 'Quality'. Quality is how well the anime is drawn and how well the animation is. Reusing frames / etc is all frowned upon. The quality of Eva, in this aspect, is very good. It doesn't have any hugely amazing scenery or anything, but then again, neither does DBZ (hence the parallel).

It's a shame shinji bugged the hell out of you, perhaps that was because he was true to real life. That is why I liked the character developement, shinji was portrayed as having real emotion. He wasn't just some super hero that could do everything, he was scared and confused. He wanted a normal life and wanted to hide behind others. Shinji sported the nice guy profile that comes up in so many ATOT threads. Because he bugged the hell out of you does not mean the character developement was poor either.

Perhaps you would consider it twisting and throwing in religion, but others who have looked at it more closely thought the religious twist was very well thought out. I am not very religious though so I had a hard time comprehending most of the concepts. I havn't done a search for awhile, but perhaps you could find some sites on google where people disect the religious intent in Eva, because it goes FAR beyond most animes.

Yes the plot hurt towards the end, thus the movies were created. The original ending was insanely anti-climactic.

But nevertheless, you only answered half my paragraph here. Do you truely believe he should skip this series all together? You think this series is not worthy of watching or experiencing at all? Even though a great majority of all anime fans would recommend it at the drop of a hat?

For me a good anime film is one that would be a good live-action film as well. In other words, good story, decent acting, music that doesn't make me want to puke (<-- hard to find in anime), not pornographic and ultraviolent for no reason, etc.

The Anime I own are:
**** Princess Mononoke
*** 1/2 Grave of the Fireflies (a great drama which is really an animated movie and not anime)
*** 1/2 Akira (though the graphic novels are more philosophical)
*** 1/2 Ghost in the Shell (I enjoyed the production value and identity crisis)
*** 1/2 Perfect Blue (like a more coherent mulholland drive; if only they released a version without the last 30 seconds and/or closing music)

I recommend them all. I am currently renting Lain #1 but have not watched it yet. I've also seen the following:

*** 1/2 My Neighbor Totoro - especially worth owning if you had kids
*** Kiki's Delivery Service - worth renting
** 1/2 Castle at Cagliostro - arguably worth renting
* 1/2 Ninja Scroll - complete garbage in comparison to good cinema, arguably watchable in terms of the anime genre
1/2 Armitage 3 - sub par
** 1/2 Vampire Hunter D - So bad it's good in that Ed Wood kind of way, while at the same time containing some interesting artwork
* Fist of the North Star - Reminded me of an old genesis game, but hardly quality filmmaking otherwise
* 1/2 Patlabor 2 - worth seeing for free on encore action, but too confined in the "mechanized robot" genre
** 1/2 Macross Plus - mildly entertaining but awfully stereotypical

Although not really anime, I also recommend Spawn (animated HBO series), I'd give it 3 stars

reusing frames... two words... flashback episodes. :p
lets make new episodes using almost all footage from previous eps... lol. eva and kare kano come to mind. thank you gainax.

i said char development was ok, just that shinji was an annoying character. imo he was overly wussy.

you think i haven't read people's eva synopsis and dissections of eva? :p imo they are digging too deep to find stuff that doesn't exist.

with eva there's two different schools of thought you can take when dealing with the weirdness:
1. eva is a extremely deep work full of religious and psycological truths that not everyone will get. and watching it over again will peel away layers of dept and reveal new truths of life you didn't notice before. the hurting brain affect is caused by the influx enlightenment. deepest anime over.
2. eva isn't very deep at all. the guy was insane, people are digging for truths and profoundness that isn't there because they don't want to accept wasting 26 eps worth of their time/life. the hurting brain affect is caused by lots of crap thrown together that makes no sense. most overhyped anime ever.

obviously i'm in the minority group. :)

heh, i liked the original ending more. :) megumi running down the street with toast in her mouth. lol... oops. i mean rei. yea...

whether i like it or not, eva is hugely popular and is a stepping stone into anime for many people. so if you haven't watched it before, why not, go for it and decide for yourself whether you like it.

and so what if the majority recommend it? is that in some way suppose to make me like it? does the majority decide what i am suppose to like? i bet you the majority won't like my taste in anime, and i don't care. :D

omg, i couldn't have said it better then you. i always thought it was way way overrated, the story is what you make it... with you doing most of the "story" work:( i did think the evas were kewl though.

iew trigun, anime cliche strong but silent hero that is nearly invincible and saves the day at the last moment. boring

also don't watch hand maid may, thats the worst garbage i've ever seen.

maybe add tenchi to that list, there are slightly funny parts but the incessant fawning of the girls over some loser is unbelievable, atleast to western eyes maybe.

Thread has turned into the Eva debate. See it for yourself, and if you like it, more power to ya (and if you want it, I have the 13 VHS tape set for $65 shipped). :) Time to change the subject.

"too bad shinji bugged the hell out of me. uber undecisive wuss isn't my ideal choice for main protagonist"

My thoughts exactly, this is an all too common theme in anime. Guys are either smart yet super shy and can't seem to take any sort of affirmative action, or they are strong, thickheaded, womanizers. Is this indicative of Japanese males? Is this the result of a society that imposes conformation and strong work ethic above all else? Obviously the characters are created to connect with the intended audience. Also, what's with the bloody noses whenever they see boobs and why does it only happen to guys? Do Japanese males have underdeveloped nasal cavities? Also, why is this supposed to be funny? (no offense intended toward any people of Japanese heritage, just an observation) :)

Oh and a couple more recommended series:
The new Bubblegum crisis seems to be pretty good so far (about 2 DVDs into it). Nadesico is also good but has a lot of the typical "silly" sort of humor.
Also, one of my personal favorites I haven't seen listed yet is Dual. Good 4 DVD series, typical giant mecha/alternate universe story but it is genuinely funny in spots and not at the expense of a coherent story.

Astaroth33, La Blue Girl is hentaii, or pr0n if you want. If he wanted pr0n he would have said it, I think he wants more normal animé.

Some other good animé (not pr0n):
- Boogiepop Phantom (very weird, but good)
- Battle Athletes (combination of sports and sci-fi animé)
- Dual (mecha)
