This is the last email I sent from my work. I hit the send button while I was still angry. A big mistake. I'm usually pretty nice to people, but for this guy I made an exception. A very unprofessional exception:

"I don't know where that (last email) came from, but do you honestly think that a $40 piece of RAM is worth me 'jerking you around'. I think not.

I'm insulted not just by the accusation, but that you think that it'd be worth one ounce of my valuable time to single out one person and get some sort of sick pleasure from trying to help them when I know I can't. I never saw the RAM and as far as I know the RAM is not here. But, if it was, do you really think I'd bother lying to you?

All day long I sit on the phone and talk to people trying to help them with their computer problems because it's something I like to do. All day long I have people send in their computer parts for me to test and troubleshoot because working on PCs is something I like to do and FOR YOU TO COME ALONG AND SAY THIS SORT OF THING TO ME IS BEYOND REAL.

Sir, if you sent back a stick of RAM and we did not realize it was in the package, I'm sorry. If it got thrown away or misplaced, I'm sorry. For all I know, you never sent the RAM and this was some sort of scheme to get me to send you a free piece of RAM, but I never even thought of that as a possibility until now.

I'm not going to "blame you" for sending it back to test with the motherboard and CPU and I'm not going to accuse you of "trying to pull a fast one". That's pointless. It accomplishes nothing. But your crass remarks and piss poor attitude have no place in my mailbox.

Have a wonderful existence, without any further assistance from me.

Good bye."

So what lead to this scathing email?

This guy returned a motherboard and CPU.

We tested it.

It tested good.

We sent it back.

I got the following email:

"I sent this board back to you I also sent you 64mg. PC-133 with it that belonged to me."

RAM was not one of the items on the RMA, nor did he buy RAM from us. I responded to him via email:

"Exactly where was the RAM? Was it floating around inside the box or was it actually inside the motherboard box?"

He responded to me:

"It was in the same box with the board, cpu and fan. If you can't find it I'm just out forty bucks and to hell with it."

Well that's not cool. If he sent it, he sent it. I sent one more email and began looking around for the RAM:

"$40 or not, bad or not, I'd like to find that RAM. It's just the "right thing" to do."

I began to look around for the RAM. After half of an hour, I could find no RAM that had my work place's serial number sticker on it. Maybe it was in the bottom of the box he shipped it to us in and it got thrown away with the fill. I gave up for the time being and waited to hear from the customer again.

Eventually he responded:

"It was in a plastic envelope and I stuck it down between the cpu and the fan hoping it would stay there. If it's lost it's lost. Thanks for your efforts anyway."

He's being pretty cool about this. But, if it was really in between the CPU and fan and we found the CPU and fan and we managed to return those two pieces to him, why not the RAM?

I decided to shoot him off another email and do some more looking around:

"If it was between the CPU and the fan, and we found the CPU and fan, then I don't see how we could miss the RAM and accidently throw it away."

I still couldn't find his RAM and another day passed.

Tonight, I get the following email from him:

"I might not know very much, but I do know when someone is jerking me around. If you find the RAM shove up your ass and tell your boss he can do the same with his company."

Where did that come from??? I just don't understand. I honestly don't think there is anything that hurts more than to have someone that you're trying to help take a piss on you.

In the years I've worked as a tech, I've lost more and more faith in humanity and have felt more and more that the majority of people out there are self centered, arrogant, selfish sons of bitches, but I was totally not prepared for this email to come along and cold clock me just as I'm going home for the weekend.

Needless to say, the 6 pack of Becks is not going to last long tonight. :(

I'm actually contemplating going back to work for Pizza Hut. At least you can't get accused of losing someone's RAM and no one threatens to shove a pizza up your ass because you got a topping wrong. :( :( :( :( :(

Don't let a guy like this ruin your night. You did everything in your power and gave your best effort to help the guy out, when it was entirely possible that he was just trying to get free RAM.

Now you know what kind of people I deal with all the time. Maybe he is used to stores that do that like the place where I bought a motherboard the other day. What a bunch of assholes they are.:)

Shut up bung hole. ;)

We couldn't reproduce your problem in the tech room and we replaced your motherboard anyway. :Q

Didn't we? :p

Now what do you want? Free RAM?

Hey Craig said it was flaky when he replaced it. I also asked for ideas as to what else could be causing the problem before I brought it in.

Henry: I could only imagine. ;)

Chess9: Honestly, I have no idea what that means.

yakko: He said it was flaky because his sound card didn't work in it.

After you left, the sound card wouldn't work in the next board he put it in.

Guess his test bench sound card up and died on him.

Do you have the PC together now? Is it working well?

Did you ever find out if you had left the plastic film on your fans?

jonny-I'd tell him to shove that ram up his own @55, considering he still has it.
There's not a doubt in my mind.

I haven't had a chance to build it yet. I went to lunch after I left and then went to work.

Johnny:

Either get on your bike and hit the trails, or walk away from that job.

I don't really think you want to leave it. Sounds like too much fun most of the time. The *ssholes make everyone and everything else more bearable. That's the way I look at it anyway.

When I have a bad day I just think back to the nights I spent camped with the Marines in the sand flea infested swamp known as Camp LeJeune. Or the time I did a triathlon in Ft. Lauderdale and the Portuguese Man O' War were thicker than Bush's head. I threw up almost constantly during the 25 mile bike ride and was lucky to finish the 8 mile run without dying.

You're young and healthy. You've got it great. :p

Have another beer.

Design Dawg:....ok, well Pizza Hut customers aren't THAT bad. I never had that bad of an experience.

Besides, if someone is really pissed, you give them a coupon or something. Typically if you do something to pacify them and they back off and they typically don't tell you to fsck off at that point. In my work, I help people AND they tell me to fsck off.

It's hard to understand.

Chess9: Ack! Barfing on a bike sucks. Haven't pushed myself that hard on a bike in a long time. ;)

Johnny:

I was going about 15 miles per hour! I couldn't push. I had about 200 jelly fish stings. Man, I don't think I've ever been that sick AND vertical.

I've done some really stupid stuff. :p

humm... you're not alone.

i once had this experience with a eGay customer - he kept saying that i didn't send the item. i got so mad, until he found a note from his post office saying that the item was being held at the post office for him to pick it up.

it ruined my week. :(

Well, I'm not even the guy who worked on the mobo and CPU.

One of the other guys did and he's usually pretty "hard".

I asked him if he remembered seeing it and his response was basically this:

"As you know, the motherboard and CPU that he sent back worked fine. If there had been a stick of RAM in the box that had not come from here, and I used it to test the PC and found that it was the reason why it had not worked for him, than I would have a perfectly good reason to ship him back his product AND charge HIM for the freight! Unfortunately there WAS no RAM in the package so I would have to assume that the board did not work due to mere user error, which is more forgivable than returning a board to us, assuming that it is defective, when the actual culprit is a half ass, POS piece of RAM bought at some appliance super center instead of from us."

Hmm...

You do what you can. These days you never know who is going to try to get what from you. One would logically think if they were sending an item with a RMA that wasn't listed on the RMA, that you'd either tell them in advance or stick a note in there of some kind.

I wouldn't worry about it, the guy's probably trying to rip you off. You're better off without his business, because he'll probably try and pull this stunt with someone else.

Hope you atleast enjoy your beer. :frown:

well dirtboy, he says he sent anote with a package. I don't know if he did or not.

Assuming that he did, so what? When you call for an RMA, that sort of thing should be discussed then.

He claims that he DID discuss it with me when we were troubleshooting the board, but he admits to not discussing it with the OTHER tech when he called back later for an RMA number.
