I got this internal memo the other day.

We want to make you aware of a false anthrax scare on Friday, October 12, at our XXXXXXXXX facility in Manhattan. An employee was involved in what he considered a practical joke, leaving an open envelope containing white and brown powder on a desk of another employee.

The envelope was spotted by other employees and caused considerable alarm. Our security personnel tracked down the source, and the employee admitted the hoax. He is now facing disciplinary action, including dismissal.

We are distributing this notice not only to ensure that you are informed of what actually happened, but also to make our policy absolutely clear. In this time of heightened anxiety, there is no excuse to cause needless alarm, distress or potential disruptions. Any such actions will be considered grounds for dismissal.

I hope this guy gets fired. What the hell was he thinking?

I heard about another case of this, and the bonehead is getting charged with a felony - inciting panic.

All of the above. He covers the costs of his little prank, including the extra security costs, wages lost for those who were evacuated or who couldn't work while this was being investigated, maybe a little punitive damages to the prankee, then criminal charges (inciting panic or some kind of disorderly conduct seem to be appropriate), and finally, he should be fired and his name published by the local paper and news stations so everyone knows who the moron is and what a poor sense of judgment he has.

The same punishment goes for anyone who calls in a fake bomb threat, fake hijack attempt or any other action that's only intent is to stir up panic and scare people right now.

I heard that too. They should lock him up to set an example.

They ran a short blurb on the local news last night reminding people that even a false threat ("making terroristic threats") can get you up to 5 years and a $10K fine.

ChrichtonsGirl makes an excellent point - force these idiots to pay all the associated costs and they'd think twice.

On the Nasvhille news they are showing nightly that the hazmat teams are constantly responding to false alarms. I hope they throw the book at those dumbasses.

Funny, 5 minutes before I looked in this thread, someone from another cubicle here suggested we pull a stunt like that. I was like "not smart, no thanks", and everyone denounced the idea as stupid - and now I see this thread, ironic :)

Not only do I think such stunts are stupid, but I also think it's very un-American. When you pull off such stunts you are creating additional anxiety -- in other words, you are helping our enemy.
