Joe Theismann => Joe Thighs-man

His name is Joe Theese-man (rhymes with cheese-man). He "changed" the pronunciation in college as part of his Heisman trophy campaign ("Theismann for Heisman") and it stuck, but it's still wrong.

Eye-talian (Italian) always bugged me. It's not pronounced eye-taly is it?

One word that took me a while to figure out its pronunciation was epitome. I could recognize the meaning of the word when I heard it spoken, but when I read it, I didn't recognize it and I thought it was pronounced "eppy-tome." Don't think I ever said it that way but I didn't put it all together until I was in third or fourth grade.

Yeah that pisses me off, I've never heard it IRL.

People seem to keep pronouncing HAL9000 as "neckbeard"

Irritating isn't it.

Aaah-loo-mah-num always cracked me up. You're missing a syllable there America.

Also people who pronounce "quay" as "kway".

The worst is loyer. Its lawyer!! There's no O so its lawyer! You don't hear cops shout "stop in the name of the loy"

I hate that.

Some of these are regional. Warsh is distinctly midwestern, used to work by phone with some people in Nebraska and they ALL pronounced it that way...not sure why since "wash" lacks a necessary "r."

Idea - idear
Italian - eye-talian
Parmesan Oregano - Par-mee-san Oreg-ahn-o

Whenever my old job did national phone studies, newbie county mispronunciations were always fun.

San Luis Obispo - San Lew-ee Ob-see-po
San Joaquin - San Jaw-walkin
San Mateo - San Matty-o
Alachua - Al-ah-kew-ah
Brevard - Bree-var-ed
Horry - Whore-y

People have posted a couple of these, I don't understand that they mean, both of those sound exactly the same.

Hint: In an amusing mispronunciation thread, if it doesn't sound different, you're probably guilty of the same pronunciation. 😉

General American pronunciation doesn't follow vowels with "r" sounds unless the letter is actually there. "Idear" and "warsh" sounds ridiculous to the majority on this side of the pond.

CZroe once said "lawyer" in front of our niece. She interrupted him and said: "Wait! Say that again?" When he responded "law-yer," she laughed hysterically. He had to explain to her that "loyyer" is incorrect and "lawyer" is correct.

I pronounce Idea as "eye de-a" not "eye de-aaaarrrrr" but if apple made a product called the iDeer it would sound exactly like idea.

Would you say that "i-fear" rhymes with "idea?"

IT DOES NOT.

...unless you pronounce "deer" as "dee-ah" and "fear" as "fee-ah."

How could they sound "exactly the same" unless you're one of those folks who obliviously says "ideer" instead of "I-dee-uh."

because "yer" and "yuh" sound almost identical unless you extend the last letter for example "yerrr" sounds very different to "yuhhh"
