<< Someone I know has just had over $20,000 stolen from his bank account. Someone got ahold of his account number, social security number and got fake ID. He got a call from the bank telling him that a bunch of his checks were bouncing that he paid bills with and one of the check numbers he was given, that had cleared his bank, was one that was still in his checkbook. This thief actually got checks printed up. I hope they catch em soon. :|

you know what, you are ABSOLUTELY correct. my dad had been a victim of identity theft less than a year ago. caused us a HUGE headache..during our vacation too.. i had a huge thread on it a while ago in the ATOT forums. it was really really serious, and involved something similar to mail theft, except it was with the UPS

another idea. get a car battery and run jumpers from the mailbox to the battery. when the thief comes by throw the switch and shock the crap outta him. he'll be so stunned that you'll be able to subdue him and call the police!!! 😛

This guy didn't have $20k sitting around in his personal everyday checking account did he?!

Although a 12V battery won't have the breakdown voltage to shock anyone, "boobytrapping" anything is a bad idea. You, not the criminal will wind up with unsurmountable problems in court.

You could always try one of these. Set up the [camera's built in] webserver, make the IP available to the AT community, and I'm sure the mail stealing scofflaw will get caught! 🙂

No, not actually, but whoever stole the money, also made a deposit into his bank using another stolen check. He has done busines with that bank long enough, that they do not put a hold on his checks being deposited, but post them right away.

Easy: Place stamps on 10 envelopes, make the return address someting like Iraq or Afganistan, and fill all the envelopes with white powder. he'll never steal your mail again 😀

Damn, it's probably the Russian Mafia.. Seriously, there is one in Fremont.. They hit our neighbors pretty hard too. They caught one guy by placing a camera towards the mailbox and getting the guy's face.. Turns out he was part of this Russian Mafia. Since then, no more problems.. so far 🙂
