What am i looking to spend for win98-XP Pro?

Hello, I have recently lost my Windows Disks and need to replace them! But I am not sure where i would go to purchase them, or for what price. I Really do not need the CD-Key (Still have the ones from my old disks) But i do need a copy of the disks themselves... Also i do not want to buy them from Microsoft because thier just too pricey and i dont need brand new disks


Anyone have any info on where i can purchase used M$ Disks and/or how much they'd cost?

A large number of places online will sell you just WinXP/Win98 CDs without a license key for $5-10 (just search for it; it's not hard to find them)... you can also copy any WinXP/Win98 CD and just use that (it's legal as long as you actually have a valid license/CD-key for it).

For god's sake, your S key is not broken. Please use it.

Oh, and if you have the license key, isn't there some legal grey area you fall into with respect to downloading a copy, since you never "owned the media" in the first place, you just paid for the license? There was a thread here recently about someone burning a Win98 ISO and using their own key which was very civil.

If you have legal keys, you can get the CD from anywhere you like. It would be better to just find someone you know with the CDs rather than download them, just in case someone is watching, but the license, not the media, is what you need to have in order for a copy to be legal, so you should be fine.

I feel like if they sold you a license to use the product, and it's legal for people who own a license for said product to copy an existing product CD (which, AFAIK, it is), it shouldn't be illegal for you to download the same data and burn it onto a CD even if you don't 'own' an original. I realize there may be some subtle legal/copyright law difference here (because our copyright laws are all basically still stuck in the 19th century, and don't even try to deal with things like the Internet), but from a common-sense standpoint, you're not doing anything different.

Perhaps the S in Microsoft should permanently be changed to $?

i only used the $ for S because every other time i've seen Microsoft abbr. its had the $ sign instead of the S sign



anyways, i dont want to d/l a copy of the hardware because of problems that can come up with missing files, burning difficulties and the like, but i'll call up Microsoft and see how much a replacement disk would cost me

Oh also, about burning a copy of a CD, i'm pretty sure the files used to install a program (like your OS) are under a different license than the actual layout and design of a CD... so burning a copy of a CD could be illegal even tho you own all other rights to the software contained in the CD...

Not really. You are generally purchasing a license for the CD, not the CD itself. As long as you hold a valid license, you can use any copy of the software that license applies to.
