What am I doing wrong?

I just put together a "new" machine with some spare parts I had sitting around. Just got them networked together today and I'm having a problem getting the new machine to see my main machine. The new machine has the modem in and using Internet Connection Sharing I can surf the internet with all my machines. However, I cannot see the new machine, or any machines on the network in My Network Places. I keep getting this message:

Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.

From the new machine, I can see all the computers but I cannot access any of the shared drives on the computers. I get pretty much the same error message. Two of the machines use WinXP and the other uses Win2k. The "new" one and my main one have WinXP on it and those are the ones I'm having problems with. All the computers are under the same workgroup, so that's not the problem.

Also, I can ping the machines no problem. Just have problem viewing the shared files. And yes, I did give them shared properties.

Thanks 🙂

This probably won't help, because you probably already know and have checked this, but if not, please make sure that the user accounts and passwords match on each machine. For example, if you have a user "Yzzim" on one machine with password "xyz", then you need to create the same user account on the other machines as well. The need to do all this user account synchronization is eliminated if you use a Windows 2000 domain, but I doubt you want to go to that much trouble. If anybody has a better solution than this, I'd love to hear it, since the way I mentioned is the only way I can get both of my Win2k Pro machines to see each other and browse each other's files without trouble.

Thanks for the answer. I actually did not setup the same accounts on other machines. Did I mention that I'm a network n00b? 😉

Anyway, I setup the accounts and it still doesn't work. Used the same usernames and passwords and I get nothing.

I now get the same error message (in bold above) on both WinXP machines when trying to access the Workgroup.

If you have XP pro you can simply install netbeui on all your machines(including the Win2k box), Then they will show up in your My Network Places(network Neighborhood). If you have XP Home, the best you can do is map network drives. Try Start, Find, Computers...Then key in the names of your networked machines and you should be able to bring them up as long as netbios is bound to the tcp/ip adapter. Now you can create your mapped drives to the shares you created.

Best of luck 🙂

What NIC are you using? Updating the drivers from the manufacturer's website might help. I have Realtek 8139B NIC's here, and WindowsXP gives them some Acer driver, which works poorly if at all. With drivers right from Realtek's site, it all works fine.

I installed Netbeui on both XP machines and now they can see eachother and I can browse files just fine.

When I'm browsing the other computer and go from the Workgroup directory into a computer to see the files I shared, is it normal for there to be a 25 second pause to go back up to the Workgroup directory?
It doesn't matter which computer I'm browsing, even if I'm browsing my own it still takes exactly 25 seconds to get back up to the Workgroup directory. The pause is very annoying. Anyway I can speed up that pause?

Both of my NICs are rather old and don't have WinXP drivers that I've been able to find. One is a CNET and the other is an AOpen. I'm using whatever drivers WinXP gives them.
