My System :
Asus p3v4x
256meg Mushkin revision3 ram running at 2,2,2
1ghz P3 with Alpha PEP fan/heatsink combo @ 1.8V
case has 2 138cfm fans (one intake, one exhaust)
At stock settings the computer my asusprobe says that my CPU is running at 28*C and MB is 22*C
When iI overclock it to around 1.1ghz (still stock voltage) the computer starts just fine, Temp on Chip is 30 and MB hardly moves but 3DMark2000 and 2001 crash on the first test. I ran quake and other games like it and it also eventually crashed, but the temp only got up to like 45-50*C which is well below the limit of 90*C.
If i underclock it to like 1080 it runs just fine. Why is this? I have very good ram, a good overclocking MB, good cpu, why can't i overclock it more and run stable???? I've gone as far as putting it at 1150 and it still boots up just fine, runs one or 2 *C higher but it still crashes on teh programs. I tried upping the voltage to as much as 1.95V from 1.8V and there was no change in performance, still crashes.
Is there something that i am overlooking? Temperature is not the problem. Should I put a heatsink ont eh clock multiplier? I saw a thermal scan of my motherboard and it is the hottest part of mmy MB, is that what is holding me back? I should be able to overclock it much more with the types of temperatures I am getting in Windows and in gaming cituations.
I would really appreciate any help you can throw my way.
