What agency to rent a car from if you're under 25...

Me and my friends are 24. We're planning a cross country trip and we gotta figure out where to go to rent a car. Are there any agencies that are a little more lenient on renting cars to those younger than 25?

thanks for the link...but we're starting the trip in new york and ending up in LA (hopefully). this site didn't seem to let me pick up the car in one state and drop it off in the other...

Depending on the agent that books it, the agent who you check in with when you pick it up, and agent who is there when you return it, you are liable to get screwed; so if you expect it and are prepared, you might not get burned. Those guys are masters at extracting money from you. Shop around and get the best deal you can, and then try to keep the deal from costing more as they pass you along.

I rented from Dollar when I was under 25. Had to pay for extra insurance though.

Do you remember how much it is?

I think it was around $10-$15 per day for an SUV in Colorado. Below is from their general policies

# Driving Age:
The minimum age to rent a DOLLAR® vehicle at most DOLLAR locations in the United States is 21 years of age; however, drivers 21 to 24 years of age must pay an additional charge, which varies by DOLLAR location. Please refer to the Local Policies for specific information on driver ages at the DOLLAR location where you intend to rent a DOLLAR vehicle and the applicable charge for drivers 21 to 24 years of age.

I, too, rented from Dollar when I was 23.
It was expensive, but worth it. My wife and I rented a convertible for our honeymoon. I think that it was about $500 for one week... Like I said, expensive, but it was worth it in my case 😉

The Enterprise location near my college never levied a underage surcharge... Other locations did...However Enterprise does not do one way rentals (charges like a $1500 fee)
