I know that the International Space Station is something the world is making together, but is there anyone who knows other big projects like that going on? I wonder that, because, the world now seems to not doing anything good for the future of science & technology.

Taiwan is building the largest office in the world, i think.

Yep, it scheduled to be done in 2002

1667 feet, its elevators move at 54 feet per second.

Isn't China making a big dam? That's a big engineering project.

They are and it's a heck of a big project. They're going to flood out a bunch of land. Some of it even has historic Buddhist temples on it which are so old they can't be moved. It's going to be the biggest dam in the world, but probably cause the most environmental damage.

I just saw a Discovery Channel show not too long about Japan building the world's largest floating airport.

Think they'll fly a plane in to that? 🙁

My fiance was working on a new storage method for HDD that could use almost the same technology used today but have 500x the storage capacity. Unfortunately the project was moved to a university in pennsylvania.

Yeah, I caught part of that. It was pretty cool. Too bad they are tearing it down.

The biggest in world is to be the already mentioned Three Gorges Dam project. California is also building a large resevoir in case an earthquake disrupts water from the Colorodo River. NYC building several more aquducts to bring water into the city. The project has been going in for over 30 years now. I've bee told that the great grandsons of the original "sandhogs" are joining the project.

The biggest waste of money has to be the Big Dig in Boston.

Isn't that the amazing sinking airport? It is cool, but didn't work as planned.

Specific that I know would work? Nope.

Specific ideas that other groups have developed based on the time and money spent plus lost productivity caused by wasted and resources? Yes. The $10 - $15 billions that will be spent on the project could have been used to expand the public tranportation system. Right now the system is not 24 hours and service is very irregular or non existant in many areas. Many people now drive because there are no alternatoves. Idea have been proposed to rehabilitate the existing highway system to remove bottlenecks. Increased safety will decrease accidents in areas that have an accident rate many times the national average.

What the Big Dig will do is bring more cars into Boston. Not a good idea since there are already too many. Plus the politicians have a differant idea of what "traffic" is compared to the average person. The plan will mean no more than a few hours of traffic that flow less than 25 MPH on I-93. In other words it just means there will still be a hell of a lot of traffic, it just moves a little faster. Many of the "goals" acheived have done little to aleviate the traffic mess. The Ted Williams tunnel to the airport is usually open to taxi or commercial traffic but not general traffic. That means people still have to use the Sumner to get to the airport and surrounding areas. Traffic is terrible there because the roads are rerouted every few weeks or months. Another is an exit that I used to take. The Levertt Overpass. In theory it could move several thousand cars per hour and provide a way into Cambridge. In reality it is stuck at the end of an already congested Storrow Drive. Not only that but stick several stop lights at the end of the ramp and several more in an unsycronized fashion, it creates chaos. Now you have traffic backed up just as far as before. But hey, you get a nice view of the Fleet Center.

An example of pork barrel spending on pet projects. Now that the Federal goverment is sick of the overruns, other people who do not even get close to Boston are penalized with higher tolls on the Massachusetts Turnpike. This will surely push people onto surrounding roads. Why to pay sit in traffic when sitting on Route 9 or Route 20 is free?
