Tom Cruise is a good actor. And he works in a lot of different genres: Jerry Maguire (romance-drama-comedy), Vanilla Sky (drama-thriller), Tropic Thunder (comedy), Magnolia (serious film is serious), Minority Report (sci-fi action) etc.
The problem I have is that he can play in plenty of different genres, but he's the EXACT SAME ROLE in every one of those genres! If you're looking for a short guy with a hyper-intense slightly manic attitude, he's perfect for the role.
While he's a bit difficult to take serious after Snakes on a (Mutha-Fu**in') Plane, he's a decent actor. The problem is, he's stuck in a rut with the roles they give him, and a lot of that has to do with star power versus the limited number of big name african-american actors in Hollywood.
Here's the breakdown, as I see it:
Samuel L Jackson-#1 pick if you need an angry black man with ghetto cred
Lawrence Fishburne-#1 pick if you need a seriously intense black man, middle of the road type
James Earl Jones-#1 pick if you need a wise older black man--he can be angry or intense, but you'll listen to him because he has the wisdom of the universe (he also rocks as the voice of an evil emperor's sidekick! :awe: )
Honestly, other than those 3 actors, can anyone name an african-american male who consistently works in Hollywood??
